hard starting

my starter on my 68 472 drags when starting the moter when the moter is warm I have replaced the starter no luck. backed off the timming no luck.
The battery is only a few years old and the starter runs free when the moter is cold and if you let the moter sit for about a hour or more. It is like its trying to start under compression

Michael...Since you've already replaced the obvious..starter..I suggest you check the battery including a draw test. Average life of a Battery is only like 30 Months.

Then I'd check your Cables for corrosion, swelling and ground and then...The replacement starter. Depending where it was rebuilt it may still be the culprit.

Check all the BASICS , battery correct size , cables correct size , good clean connections , cable ends , good grounds , voltage drop etc etc. :my2cents:

hot and cold

what is the differance between the hot and cold starting it only dose it after you driven it like when you go to the store and get a supper big gulb and go back to the car to drive it over to get a big mac.
but if you stay and eat 6 or seven big macs the car will start normal.
I will run down to the shop and switch the battery from the hearse to the limo and see if it makes a differance.

battery not helping

swapped the battery out of the hearse into the limo did not make a differace.
timing is spot on but tommorw I will get new cables the ones on their now have the clamp on post on them.
The dash lights dim when cranking
I got the moter off of criegs list and replaced every thing when I insalled it and the new starter I installed at that time did the same thing so I bought a new one from the same auto parts store, could I possabley have two bad starters ?
I don't have all the fancy gauges that the cad manual says to test so it might be cheeper to start replacing parts but even though its been a at least a year secne i replaced the starter I might try a differant store for a new starter I found out with ignition switch for a ford we went through 4 that would would not work till i switched stores

How close is your exhaust to the starter? When I was into the hot rods I often had to install a heat shield to protect my starter, too close to the exhaust & the heat will affect it & make it drag when hot. Used to get heat shields through Summit or Jegs & they're very affordable.

I have a friend that has a 454 SS Chevy truck and he said his truck won't start when it was hot. He said he took a small water gun and sprayed the starter to cool it off. He said it worked until he replaced the starter. :bonk:

If I remember we just had a thread about this. You may want to search the older messages to see if we came up with the answer. As I recall the problem wasn't the battery, however there were several possibilities that were addressed.

I had the exact same issue with a 472 in a 73 Miller Meteor. Engine was a fresh rebuild. Replaced battery with the biggest and baddest that would fit in the battery box. No more problems!

It's totally possible that you might have two so-so Battery's. Until you've had them checked including a load test you can't rule either out.

Yes, you can get two bad starters. Like everything else made today most is junk. A couple years ago I had a starter go out, got one for $90, it started the car twice and quit. I took it to my mechanic to have it checked out because I didnt think it was the starter again, he replaced it with a $150 starter from his source (not Advance auto like the one I got) and I never had any trouble since.

All rebuilt parts are only as good as the person or company doing the rebuilding. There is more to a rebuild than just putting in new brushes and turning the armature commutator.

hot starting

I think Dwayne is on track with that heat shield idea. It is one of those parts some people don't put back when they replace a starter. I had an IH that did the same thing. The starter acted as a heat sink. Fine starts when cool or cold and slow going or maybe no start when hot. I too poured the cool water on the starter to get it going. Clean connections, proper size cables, a load tested battery of the correct size, and a heat shield should do the trick.

got a shield

got a rap around heat sheild for the starter will try this out did get it installed but have not tried it out.
If i have time tonight will get the battery tested

helped

Helped a lot but still drags I am going to try a thicker lead down to the starter but have not found it yet, napa and my local parts store only have 4 gauge wire and the line on the hearse larger and is the original . cable for the limo has been replaced before with a smaller wire
We had both cars out today for a show and drove them about 25 miles to the show but drove stright their so did not try to restart them when they were hot. I meant to but forgot. My brother drove the limo and I had the hearse. I only have the problem when I try to restart after about ten or fifteen minites. Had the batterys tested and they are great the one for the limo is a new style I don't remember the type but it not shaped like the standard battery it tested out to full and they thought it had 1,000 cca.
swiching batterys from the cars did not help

GM problem change the solenoid. check to be sure that the exhaust is not leaking on to the starter. worse case scenario is put a remote solenoid on it off a ford or chy. this was the standard fix for the grain trucks. they would be going slow in the field and working all day the solenoid would get hot and the starter would not spin fast enough to start the truck. the remote ford solenoid did the trick. but in your case. you have changed everything else. 4 gage wire is sufficient for the 12 volt system. it's juns not getting the juce threw to the starter motor.

Thanks for this reminder, I totally forgot about this old fix.
