Government hearses

My secretary told me she saw a “government hearse” on a Massachusetts street yesterday. She claims it had government registration plates but did not notice any window signs. Can she be correct? Does the government have its own fleet of hearses? I always thought the government contracts hearses from local funeral homes when needed.

Gov hearse

Haven't seen any in CA at least. I would imagine the government "out sources" services like that and if they had any.... they would probably be more like an austere gray van than a commercially built hearse? I did see a picture of a late model (maybe early 90's) White Buick Hearse once that had U.S. NAVY nameplates inside the rear doors and I believe it was in Hawaii.

There was one on e-bay a few weeks ago...supposedly from the Washington area with Diplomatic plates I believe...Didn't last long until it was sold I believe.

You are partly correct. On page 146 of Walt McCall's book "American Funeral Vehicles 1883-2003" there is a picture of a white Superior Buick Regent with "U.S. Army Mortuary" name plates in the windows with Army license plates too. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Partly Right

Peter: At my age being "partly correct" is GOOD! I knew I had seen the White Buick Hearse in a publication somewhere and that it was on a Military Base in Hawaii and made the assumption it was NAVY. THX for the correction. MM

We had this discussion on the old website, relating to President Ford's funeral a few years ago in DC. Yes, the government does own some hearses, I saw some at the funeral with DC "exempt" inspection stickers (for Federal vehicles in DC) and no license plates.

Military branches own some for military funerals.
