got AC again

if your broke down it much better to do it at home. dropped down to my favorite AC man and explained the tale on the 86. he can't believe the shaft in the compressor is bent ether. so when we picked it up 95 bucks later he told me what was wrong. got to give the Rad-Air people in Akron some credit. there was a problem with the rebuilt clutch that the parking lot mec got for me from his supplier. or they damaged it messing with things. at this time who can say it was not that the bearing was in crooked or that the shafe was bent though. the coil pack the re builder used was damaged. the inner lip is all chewed up and there are hammer marks on the out side. Allen tried to assemble it and had the same problem but then put back in the original coil pack and it works like a new clutch assy. to get the clutch in place they dropped out the sub frame and engine in the car. only had to drop it about 3 inches to clear the body to put the clutch on the shaft. so now I'll go put back on the access panels we took off and drive the car enough so know that the 200 dollar new compressor in the trunk is not needed yet. we got 600 bucks in it so far but we have AC and a new compressor to be used at a later date to show for the money. I ordered the pully removing tool for 20 bucks to. next time we will be ready.

I had to have the engine unbolted from the motor mounts to have a water pump replaced in an '88 Olds with a Quad 4, and the entire dash had to come out of my '97 F150 to replace the heater core. These have to be considered engineering failures...

if we had the tool we could have made the repair in the parking lot. but it was not something I really wanted to do. no I left this one in the hands of the take care of my light work will you crew at Rick's auto. I try to stay away from stuff I not that comfortable working on. I find the out come is usually better and cheaper. this go round was not the case though. still wounder why the man at Rad air did not try the other coil pack after the damaged one in the rebuilt box. they had the equipment to evacuate and recharge the system so the compressor could have been removed to replace the clutch. not drop out the sub frame. Rick's had it on the hoist and decided it was easier to pull 4 bolts then remove the compressor. I did pay them the standard rate for replacement. but the trip home only lets you remember why you have AC in a car. done is done sufficient to say I'll not recommend any one using that firm in Ohio. Ron's mechanic how ever was a different story. we could not gather up the special tool for the older systems, though. one more lesson if you have a car that takes special tools to do common things better gather them up. the difference in the charge to do the same procedure was the labor rate 50 vs 90 bucks a hr. just like the 50 bucks a can for r-12 here vs the 100 in Ohio. ain't old cars just nothing but fun.
