Gas Cap Help

Recently i had the misfortune to travel through New Jersey... where nobody is allowed to pump their own gas. The attendant lost my gas cap. I ordered a replacement 1970 Cadillac gas cap, but found that it does not fit. Does anyone know what gas cap was used on a 1970 Superior?

James,
I am sure someone may know the answer to your question. In case the answer does not appear try this. Go to your local (friendliest) parts store and tell them your predicament. Maybe they will let you try several caps to find one that fits correctly. I think too this may be a vented cap.
Good luck. Maybe Paul can help here.

they are not a caddy part but a superior part. with the out side ears. be the same type car as most farm machinery and you might have better luck at a farm fleet type store then a automotive store.

Before putting another cap on there, make absolutely certain whether a vented or non-vented cap is needed. I played a similar game with a '66 Fleetwood that I recently sold. BTW, why no self-serve in the Garden State??

Not sure "why" Jersey has no self-serve. Maybe someone that lives there (Jeff) can explain. It was actually an ugly incident... I know when I am riding my motorcycle through Jersey, I don't allow them to fill it. The police that came the night I lost the gas cap told me that while it is discouraged, there is no law that prevents you from pumping your own gas.

Don't know what I would do cause I don't let anyone touch my car if I can help it. Cap on the way there James!:D

gas caps and Jersey

The gas cap on my coach has the same mounting as a radiator cap. Maybe your's does too. I don't think the coach builders used the marque filler tubes. I tried several places to get a replacement cap. One parts store said 'that looks like a radiator cap'. From there it was easy to get a cap that works...but does not look like the original.
How many people would be out of work if Jersey let you pump your own gas? That is one answer I heard.
Maybe someone knows a gov't official who can explain this one.

like I said the same cap as farm machenery. they built there own fill neck and used that out side eared cap. not inside tabed anti blow back GM one. the other people used the sawed off end of the tank with a rubber hose so they keep the gm cap. go to the farm fleet store and you can pick one up. yes it's a vented cap in those years. pep boys most likly can't help as they have no ida and have never see it. remember it's not in there computer.

Pep Boys vs...

I can't speak about PepBoys. We don't have one near here. We do however have an O'Riellys. My first trip they said 'it ain't in the computer, but let me get the book'. They found a listing for a 62 Cadillac and that was close enough. My coach is a 61. Now when I go in they don't even go to the computer. They just ask what book do we need?
Computers are only as smart as the people programming them. The info is still in the books if you can read or will take the time. I have been happy with the service I get from the 'Irish' parts store. I even get my modern car stuff there.

good to know they have one of them in the big city I do vary good a car quest. but it all comes down to you got to know what to ask for. that gets kind of iffy for the cowl back on these cars. but here in a small town they just hand me the book and say look it up. between there book and the exchange Manuel I can usually find a part that will fit. in might not be right even then for the Commercial cars.
