Found this little gem yesterday

Barb and I were out Christmas shopping yesterday, and on the way from Sandusky to Norwalk we ran some back roads. Came up over a little hill and caught this out of the corner of my eye. I snapped around so fast I hurt my neck. Went back today and got these photos from the road. There wasn't anybody home, so we don't enter the property. Zoomed the camera in for all is't worth.

It's a 1955 Chevrolet, unknown body manufacturer, can't even tell if it's a service car, or if it's a combination with the windows are painted over. Looks to be pretty far gone.

Looks like an old Chevrolet hearse that is slowly being reclaimed by the earth... Still some good pieces remain, like the bumpers and bumper guards. The guards were an option in 1955... Makes me wonder what my 1955 Chevy Convertible came back as after it went to the other side............

Such a shame to see a beautiful vehicle wither and die like that. I hope the owner plans on restoring it soon. Some of the best cars I've seen at shows are the ones that started out like this one. I love to see them come back to life.

1955 Chevrolet/Barnett service car

I did a couple of searches and couldn't find it, but this car (or one just like it) has been discussed on this site before.

needs a redo

To make a long story a little shorter I am a Plumber and we were doing a new house for a couple it was a nice house with a day light basement. and a very nice garage. The couple for a home busness took your old chevy 50s and 60s and they knew what 70s and 80 frame and running gear would fit the old bodys and rejoin them, he had a 57 chev with a I think a 70s monte carlo frame and runnig gear a/c power stearing and power breaks. when he got the car running they but it in the basement and the wife redid the interor. with this they saved a lot of old cars and gave the bodys a new life wish someone could do this with this nice old gal I am not a chevie guy but this one I like

Maybe Dwayne Brooks knows something about it. I put it up here because this is the first time I noticed the car there, we travel that road every few months. Don't ever remember seeing it on here either.

Just a thought. Doesn't that roof look a little tall for a service car? I would have guessed that car to be an ambulance.

Russell I haven't seen that coach in my travels or even heard about it until today. I've been stewing on it all day & it is a very, very odd configuration. All the rear windows are filled in with metal just like a service car... yet it has a raised roof like an ambulance. Finally kicked my daughter off the computer to have a better look at it (was using the Droid phone earlier today when you posted) and there's surface rust on all the window fillers so they are metal. Superior did this on their military ambulances in the early '50's on the rear doors, but those doors were also sealed shut, door handles removed, upholstered over inside, and they left the rearmost side windows in place.

As sad as it looks it's still very interesting. Rocker panel is gone and there's quite a hole, wonder how bad it's rotted into the front door post. I'd love to check it out closer if you'd PM the location Russell. Maybe our buddy Keith can chime in on this one, he's sharp on the older coaches & over in Shelby... possibly he's seen it before or knows what it truly is. Maybe the interior could give up some clues, especially if we can find a build tag. At any rate i'd love to scope it out for the site & talk to the owner/take detailed photos.

Excellent find Russell! You & I need to have lunch sometime. Talked to Rocky this morning & we'd also like to pick your brain on the '56 Olds ambulance I dragged out of Fremont for him, have always enjoyed reading your stories too. My vote for now is an ambulance that at some point was modified with the windows filled in. Looks like it's been set up this way for years...

Awesome you found that thread Steve! Same car, just looks worse now. So it's a 1955 Barnette service car?

he has a windshield in it now. so it has some improvement. the rest is just picking around stuff seeing what is there and that is not. still a vary restorable car is you interested in it. not a lot of interior in a service car so that would help. the Chevy stuff is still all available so we'll have to keep a eye on this one. be nice to get the man on here.

It has a windshield in it in the picture of it on the tow truck.. Look through the drivers side window opening and out the passenger side window opening... The background is clear... Look at the background through the windshield on the right side and the vent window, and it is "fuzzy".. Possibly these old eyes can see what your old eyes can't... LOL.. Paul

The 1955 Chevy's posted here look a lot like Barnette products to me. Note the highly crowned roof line. I'll have to go and take a look but, right now, I'm betting that this car is a Barnette-Chevrolet.
