First show - What class am I ?

My 73 MM made her first public appearance today. Got lots of smiles and attention but no award. I was judged in a " modified" class. Not sure if that's appropriate. What say you ?

Depends on what other classes they had. Many people think these cars were modified from a complete sedan. Do you bring any info with you such as pictures of the commercial chassis before the body is added?

Every show is different, it seems. Some have a professional car class, but most do not. Special Interest is generally the class you will be in. But, since every show is different, sometimes you will either decide, or help the show registration decide the class you should be in. My advice, just have fun and if you win an award, be grateful. I think professional cars have gained lots of recognition in recent years, we show them with pride and with respect and gradually, our cars are getting respect and we are too.

you don't bring it to a local show to win a award you bring it to show it off. they had our local show today also. I was talking with a man who has owned his stock 1968 charger since new. he stated he never has won a award at a show like this but up in the Chrysler show he gets second or third every time

Well said, Bill. I've shown my passenger cadillacs/Olds/Buick for a number of years now and I rarely stay til the awards are given out. Most are just too damned long with little to do except check out the cars 5-6 times. I've won awards that I wasn't there to accept so it certainly isn't about filling the mantelpiece.
I can say that I've never experienced the excitement of people when they see a ambulance. Lots of pointing fingers, smiles and "wows". Older folks remember them and kids love to sit in the jump seat. More than one person said " I knew of them but had never seen one in person"
I taped a history of the car to the window and explained how/why/where it served and a history of why passenger based ambulances no longer exist today. Most read it and went away with a greater understanding and appreciation.
I think those who viewed it appreciate it for the same reasons we do: They're styling, stature and presence are regal and magnificent to behold....on to the next show !

Mike, I think you have the right idea. You are right about the excitement around an ambulance, people do seem to enjoy them. I heard a funny one last night, while sitting by my combo, a lady and her husband are passing and she says to her husband "Let's look at the hearse/ambulance!" to which he replies "There is no such thing" to which I replied "She's right!"

If you think about it, you can ride in it twice in the same week....

I took my 55 Pontiac Barnette to it's first show at the Back to the Bricks show in Flint this year and they have everything there from museum quality classics to really beautifully done street rods among the thousands of cars that show up at the three day event. I guess mine is in the middle somewhere as far as perfection, but I couldnt believe the positive response from people of all ages that said they had never seen one like it and from some few who actually remembered seeing ambulances that were built from cars. The reactions were all very positive and I enjoyed having a quite unique vehicle that had the stories of a car that performed a public service...
