Door weatherstrip adhesive question

I could have asked Ed this question directly but I thought others might be interested in his answer: I am replacing the weatherstripping on my car doors. The weatherstrip I purchased has a pull-off strip that reveals some sort of sticky surface. The instructions for the adhesive I'm using (3M 08008 black) says to apply the adhesive to both surfaces and allow it to become tacky. My question is, since the weatherstrip already has some sort of adhesive on it, should I apply the 3M only to the metal and assume both adhesives will form a viable attraction to each other? Of course anyone is welcomed to advise me in this. Gracias amigos!

I have given up on the 3-m and the black long before the yellow. I got to using the weld wood contact cement. professional grade. quart can, acid brush to spread. but like the 3-m stuff that use to work so well. it's called contact because it sticks to it's self. you must coat both surfaces and let then set till they are dry to the touch then press them together were you want them. no adjusting here and they are down were you put them. don't streach the seal just lay it down. the nice part about the contact cement is that after it's dry to the touch it will not stick to anything but it's self. so keep the parts apart is as simple as a layer of newspaper. they put the gummy strip on the weather seal for people to just put it on then it can fall off and they can sell more. I found that the 3-m stuff now will really move around on you. I did the 73 with the yellow and when I opened the door in the spring the tops were all pealed back. they are leaving something out of it again. the weld wood is a little messer to use but it ends up a lot cleaner. I have not had to re do a door on the 66. only a spot or two were I use the 3m first. it makes the 45 well to. not as heavy a body as the 3-m either. so if you can handle diping a brush insted of squezing a tube then use the weld wood.

trim-rubber adhesive

I use a Dow automotive eurathane adhesive, this is the same stuff used by glass companies during windshield installations. It cures fast and just use a little bit and hold it inplace with some blue painters tape. Within 20-30 minutes your ready to go and cleanup is not too bad either.
