I posted the above in another thread, with great hope and excitement.Wednesday, I'm going parts-shopping at a rescue squad that is moving. I'm going to help "clean out" their old station.
I got my start riding ambulances at the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1980, and was a member there until 1993. I learned a lot about EMS there, but mostly I learned a lot about dealing with people. The station was a converted garage that had been expanded in the '60 and again in the '70's, but was always just a bit too small.
On Saturday, WVRS will be moving into their new station, decades in the making and the first station built from scratch for them. I'm happy for them, and am looking forward to attending the dedication.
I'm on the e-mail list for the WVRS alumni. One of the e-mails that went out Monday mentioned that they would be throwing out "old stuff" Wednesday (yesterday). So I e-mailed the Deputy Chief, who I know, and he said to stop by Wednesday, he'd be there, and I could get any of the EMS items they would be disposing of. That's how "old stuff" becomes "antiques".
I called him yesterday before I went down. He told me that he looked through and all the old EMS equipment had been thrown away last weekend. :4_11_9:
And this is how "old stuff" becomes trash (in that county, it goes to the power plant incinerator) and how our rare "antiques" become even more rare.... Grrrr....
