Crashed Ambulance

I got these from Scott Walker while in Flint. He was the attendant when this happened back in 1974.

I can Honestly say I have never been in an Accident while Running code (when I was Driving). I did hit a Suspect's Vehicle during a Traffic Stop In The attempt to Flee the Scene.

right now with the rest of the car in the shape it is in we would try to fix it. the pull on the frame being the only really expensive part. but I would bet it was junked. down time being the excuse. that was a hard hit any time you fold the wheel up you smacked something hard. 1500 for a new front clip and about a grand to pull the frame at the aliment shop and you got a low top ready to roll.

Since we're on the subject...

Here's one from HORNE-VINSON, a funeral home-based ambulance service I once worked for in Jackson, MI -- also wrecked back in 1974 -- that I was fortunately NOT riding in at the time!

Pretty amazing that there is minimal damage to the passenger compartment in both. Considering they both probably started as just a chassis and front clip, it's nice to see coachbuilders safety standards appear to be on par with the factory.

Ouch

Most of us kept thesepics. in a file stached in the back of our desks so our staff never had ammunition on us- Been there and done that- again- OUCH

Wow, '74 was a bad year for ambulances. Here's one from my old VFD here in MD, from November of '74. It was a '68 CB Olds. The oncoming car crossed the center line to go around a car that pulled over for the ambulance.... :(

By the way, CB's around here usually had 4 Junior beacons at the time, to mimic the M-M Full-Vu lights.

Yikes! These pictures do make me wince, although Dr. Richard's '72 photos ARE of interest for obvious reasons! I hope none of our cars ever look like these!

those full frame cars sure look familiar. they were new just after I started doing body work. you see the one wheel sits up higher on it. both were the type of hits that the 09 and 59 were run into. the only difference is they were not staged so they were not a perfect hit. but extensive frame damage to both of them even though the drivers compartment was vary much in tack. the second one only has the wheel cover bent it's still in place those caddy covers really hang on. marry the two of them together and you got a good car again.

HORNE-VINSON Ambulance

Dave. Was Jim Vinson Driving By Chance LOL

Russ

As I recall, Russ, that ambulance was being driven by an 'older' gentleman (I was only 21 at the time!) named Don Clark... who lived across the street from my family's home in Jackson (MI). I believe he lost control of the vehicle on an icy roadway and slid into a tree, fortunately injuring no one (except the ambulance!) seriously. Coincidentally, Mr. Clark's brother, Richard, would subsequently start a 'rival' service (to HORNE-VINSON), "Jackson Transport Ambulance," shortly afterward.

On a side note, I had occasion to speak with Geroge Vinson, Sr., one of the HORNE-VINSON co-owner's, just a few months ago... reconnecting after more than 30 years! Although retired from the ambulance service since 1979, when he sold that facet of his funeral home business to what would later become "Jackson EMS" (now "Jackson Community Ambulance"), he still spends the summer months living near Jackson, while 'wintering' in Florida. Mr. Vinson promised that he would check his archives upon returning to Michigan this summer, and share with me any remaining photographs he may have of the 1960s-vintage ambulances HORNE-VINSON operated... vehicles I was totally captivated by as a young boy and spent countless hours drawing pictures of!

Stay tuned...
