Charlotte AutoFair report

1st time attending. 11,000 vendors on 150 acres. Didn't expect to find too much procar stuff so expectations were low in that regard. Here's some of the more interesting stuff/prices - including a little more than procar.

Drove the '95 to have plenty of hauling space. Last 15 miles took almost an hour through heavy congestion. Had planned on arriving 30-40 minutes before gates opened which didn't happen. A buddy called who beat me there by 10 minutes to relay a body was found in the first field directly across from the parking lot we planned on meeting in. Apparently a male vendor passed sometime during the night sleeping in his truck. His discovery had just been made.

Well, once I was close enough to parking people, they opened a lane for me to drive through, holding other people up. After reaching front of line, I relayed that I was not there for the body and that I prefer to pay for parking. Of course everyone thought I was joking...

Onto fun stuff.

I like original more than repop. Bought 'em.

Beautiful yet pricey small (slightly larger than a metal lunchbox) Coke airline cooler. Never seen one before and can appreciate rarity. It sold shortly after too.

Only landau irons in entire place and of course they stuck right out. '80s? Too new for me. Still, for $45/pr the chrome was excellent.

The first random/bizarre twist of the day happened as I was taking the above photo. A mid-'70s gentleman overheard me inquiring about the landau irons and a conversation with him ensued. Turns out he owned a '54 Eureka flower car(!). His wife comes over and the two of them have me in stitches as they lovingly reminisce, relaying story after story about that "open hearse". 10 minutes later he relays that although the flower car is long gone, he still has spare parts tucked away in his garage loft. Turns out when he bought the flower car a bunch came with it from a parted hearse. He kept it all. The hearse was a '54 Eureka landau(!). We exchanged info after I told him I was interested in buying whatever he wanted to sell. Awe struck experience.

'32 Studebaker Rockne Coupe!?! Rare! Only seen one before in private collection. Can't imagine replacing for $29.5k would be easy in this condition.

Blue lenses are throwing me on this. Flat base would mean fire truck, right? Front lens glass (cracked), rear lens plastic w/ '62' molded around perimeter. Didn't look like it was worth $125.

Complete dreamer fishing - batwing priced 3x market value.

You are correct on the Landau bars. They appear to be early 80s to present Superior. Pretty good parts find. I hardly ever get lucky enough to find procar parts at swap meets. Plus you gotta love other people there, it always seems like at least one person knows where one is sitting. thats how I have learned of many coaches stuck away in my area.

Paul, missed calls from me were about these. First time nobody was at stand. Made a special trip back several hours later, still nobody there. A bordering vendor gave me contact info for you/Ed.

They were the ONLY pair I saw anywhere. Couple small bends in one insert weren't bad. .

Sharp longroof. This a '59 Chevy Brookwood could have been yours for $28.5k.

Book price raised my eyebrows. Not one that I have. It was new and unread. After checking on Amazon, I guess it wasn't as high as I thought.

Complete '59 steering column freshly removed from a 56k original mile CDV that was indoors from '71 until 5 weeks ago. White coupe with a two tone blue interior. Vendor had a few items from car available. This has a *perfect* horn ring and uncommon color steering wheel itself is very very nice.

Steering column came home with me. Couldn't leave it there, even though I don't have a '59 currently.

Part of the diecast haul. It's rainy and dark outside so this will suffice until I can open/individually photograph in natural sunlight. There are a couple surprises in here...

If wishing to quote a portion thereof, please be bandwidth conscious and delete everything else not pertinent to inquiry. Thanks! :)

Second bizarre/random twist happened a mile from Charlotte Motor Speedway when finally getting food @ Quaker Steak. Female bartender starts makes small talk, yada yada yada, and how she just moved to area 3 1/2 weeks ago. Asking where from followed suit. Then this:

"Flint, MI."

I know someone in Flint!

"Oh yeah, who?"

Brady Smith, funeral director.

"I love Brady and was engaged to his brother Rob!!!"

Surreal. I can't make this up~

...Blue lenses are throwing me on this. Flat base would mean fire truck, right? Front lens glass (cracked), rear lens plastic w/ '62' molded around perimeter. Didn't look like it was worth $125...
The blue lenses say "police" to me, might have been on a police car. With the flat base, maybe it was on a flat-top fender?

Is "American Ambulances" really selling for over $100 on Amazon? WOW!!!!

Blue light

I think the blue light is worth A LOT because it is rare. A chrome job should be under $150. I'm sure it's 6 volt too....after a chrome job I'd bet it would go for several hundred on ebay.
Just my thoughts
Kev

That siren isn't that rare, but the blue lens is not as common as the red lens. Atti did indicate that it was cracked, so that diminishes its value. I would have paid the $125 for it, but I think that is all the money for it in its present condition. I have a NOS one like it in the original box, that has the red lenses. I have seen the front lens in Red, Green, Blue, and Amber. I have the red and amber in my "collection".

were do I find that 150.00 platter I'm looking for him. the last one we did 5 pieces cost me 360. with the crack repair. sent a pm on the 58 bumper grills. thanks for checking on them for us.

I was thinking about going tomorrow, but doubt there will be anything left after Attila. I always check for matchbox size procars. The last time I went, I walked into the booth and the man said, "I don't have any hearses." I ask every time I go, so he remembered me.

Josh, there are PLENTY of hearse/ambulance diecast I left. Go! And call me when you're driving. I'll try to pinpoint areas to look. One vendor on asphault corner of TB row blue field drove from CA. He has many of the Studebaker hearse remaining and maybe a 1/18 HW Ecto...

Will look at show map late tonight and try to limit where siren and landaus were.

It was raining today. If I won't have had plans yesterday I would have gone. The weather was nicer. I hope to go to the one in Sept.
Did you walk the whole infield? My uncle and me were going every year and we walked most of the infield. By the time we go to his truck we could barely walk, but we always had a good time.

Walked entire infield (a good portion twice), past more than half of outer fields, and made mistake of carrying stuff back to coach midday - which turned out being a 3 mile round trip to Nursery Impound parking area. Beautiful weather, good time, memories, and stuff.
