Can you ID this ambulance?

Very interesting. Appears to be a Ford panel van conversion. The window design does not appear to be a Seibert. Maybe it was a local conversion. No lights/sirens.

Calling Steve Loftin? Local to you in OKC.

It seems unusual that they would have an "EXCLUSIVE BABY ORCHID AMBULANCE" just for bringing babies and mothers home from the hospital, but there it is, an interesting little bit of history.

baby ambulance

Based on the character line on the front and rear fenders, the narrow chrome strip that seems to be a bit curved, and the cowl mounted rear view mirror I am going to say this is a 1946 Ford sedan delivery based coach. The panel trucks had different fenders and bumpers. The pictures in my Ford book show the chrome at the character lines on the 47 and 48 models to be straight and maybe a bit wider than on the 46s.

I have an earlier version of this from the same firm that shows a 1935 Ford sedan delivery conversion.

It was a common practice up into the 1960s for a new mother and baby, after staying in the hospital for a week or so, to be brought home together in an ambulance. This was usually a public relations freebie from the local funeral home.
