I have a book I can't put my finger on it but they talk about those open Hess and Eisenhart open secret service cars. There were two of them built from 1976 Cadillacs. Unfortunately the secret service purposely destroyed both cars in practice maneuvers.

yes good old Ronny the only president in Hx to survive being elected in a 00 year. this was the second attempt on him. but you look at the car as it speeds away with all the hand holds and running boards and it has to be the chase car in the procession.

That car, one of two, was built by Hess & Eisenhardt for the Secret Service. There were others constructed as well om 1975 and 1977. You'll find photos of these on pages 96, 99, 124 and 125 in McPherson and McCall's Cadillac Series 75 book that was published by Iconografix back in 2009. I also have a brochure published by H&E that depicts one of these black Secret Service convertibles on the cover.

To me it seems odd when they no longer allowed a President to ride in a convertible they would get two. Maybe it was for special occassions when your own political party no longer wanted you they would stick you in it and hope for the best. I still think ragtops are some of the sweet rides the younger generations will never fully experience. The whole family could go for a spin in the older cars, now, most, are built for just two passangers and a brief case, makeup bag or a very small dog..

After JFK was assassinated in an open car on the streets of Dallas in November 1963, presidents were no longer allowed to use open cars or convertibles. The Secret Service, however, continued to use them as follow-up cars.
