C.C. Rim Referrence

Kurt Arends

PCS Elected Director 2021-2024
Again, I appologize if this issue has already been beat to death, but I am new to the group. I have, however, been messing with Pro cars since I was in high school(some 32 years ago!) and cannot seem to get it out of my blood. Has anyone put together any kind of a referrence to help us less- knowlegeable folks with identifing C.C. rims that are correct for our cars by year? I get into a lot of classic car salvage yards throughout the Mid-West and would like to be able to identify correct rims when I see them on a coach. I was just looking at a '57 Superior in a yard today that still had a spare behind the seat. It was a riveted rim with the rivets on the inside of the rim. Is this correct for a '57? A very simple referrence would be a great tool for those of us who truely enjoy helping others find hard-to-find parts for their cars, if anyone is up to it??

I had done this at one time, however, that was on another website. I haven't attempted to do this again, since I no longer have any pictures. If you were to take pictures of both sides of the wheels that you find, I am certain that we can get them identified and properly posted in a thread.
Thanks
Paul

Great idea Kurt !

It would be really helpful to have a photo reference of both sides of the wheels with measurements when inquiring about rims.

It certainly has been brought up a few times in the last few weeks.

I can provide photos for 1962, 1973 and 1976 as I have those cars.
I will photograph the spares.
I can provide photos for 1960 too but I have to remove a wheel as I don't have a spare.

Paul,

Anyway to set up a location to post reference photo threads on the site.

It would be better to have a location instead of just a thread somewhere like the emblems and landau bar thread.

Sounds like we should have a photo reference section for certain parts.

Great ideas guys,
Darren

54 Cadillac commercial wheels ?

To further this discussion, I have a 54 Superior that has wheels that are not riveted. The wheels could have been changed over the years but I am wondering when they started riveting the heavier rims ? My 56 Superior and limo both had riveted rims.
Cheers,Pat

Thanks John!
I have to back up a bit here...
I just removed one of the wheels on my 1954 Superior hearse and found that they are indeed riveted. What threw me was the riveted side faces the brake drum..unlike my 1956 Superior and limo where the riveted side faces the outside. Now all we need to know is what year the riveted side started to face outward...1955 or 1956 ??
The '54 is spaced a hair over 4 inches
Cheers,Pat

Riveted Rims

I have the spare that I got out of a '57 Superior that has the rivets on the inside(drum side).

Kurt,
I checked one of my reference photos of a '57 and they are facing inward again...I think Cadillac is starting to screw with us !!
Cheers,Pat

Pat, in answer to your question - rivets switched to outside of CC rim in '61. A few others try to point out otherwise but it simply isn't the case. I have seen several original unmolested '59s and '60s that have each had rivets facing the inside, just don't have clear close up shots to illustrate this. Both of my (previous) '59s, current '60, and former '60 MM all had rivets on backside as well.

I have never seen outside rivets on an original pre-'61 coach in person - and this includes dozens of junkyard hearses, ambulances, and limos.

Is it possible that some '60 star wheels (also '59 by default, same wheel) were made in a transitional stage with outside rivets? Sure. Definitely not the norm and would comprise a very small percentage.
