Just read this article about eBay motors on Jalopnik..

Policy overview
A non-binding bid is a bid that shows a buyer's interest in purchasing an item, but it doesn't create a formal contract between the buyer and the seller.
All bids made in the Real Estate and eBay Motors vehicles categories are considered non-binding.
Remember, bids placed in any other category are a legal commitment to purchase the item. We strongly encourage you to read the other terms for more information.
Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, you may be subject to a range of actions, including listing removal, limits on your buying and selling privileges, and suspension of your account.
What are the guidelines?
Allowed
Using listings to find buyers who are interested in purchasing your item Including information about what buyers will need to do next (for example, deposits, transfer paperwork, and transportation options) in your listing. Adding a reserve price to your listing so that your minimum price is met.

Not allowed
Bidding without the intent of completing the purchase
Retracting a bid on an item that doesn't fall into a non-binding bid category
Backing out of the transaction due to buyer or seller remorse
------Backing out of the transaction because buyers didn't place a high enough bid and the seller didn't add a reserve price------
Stating in the listing that bidding could result in a binding obligation to complete the purchase

Hmm.

I've bought two vehicles on eBay:
  • '71 Springfield Travelall ambulance, 2002
  • '54 Studebaker Ambulet, 2006
I've never had a problem. I bought the Stude from an individual (for the "Buy It Now" price), and the Travelall from a fire department at regular eBay auction. No problem with either transaction, I just paid and they just gave me the cars and titles.

Shame both parties can't just say "I'm sorry" and go their separate ways, as nobody's out any money or car.

I bought my ill-fated Merc Hearse from CW Coach thru E-Bay. Everything went well I have no complaints other than the condition of the Money Pit I got MYSELF into due to eagerness to have a Coach.

I have sold many items and many cars on ebay, with good success. I have bought some items and a few cars, both with some success. When I sell, I tend to concentrate on the bad things, so that the only surprise is that the item is usually better than described. Perhaps if everyone on ebay would over-describe the flaws, everyone would be happy.

I bought my pride and joy off ebay without any hassles.
The most expensive car I ever bought... and sight unseen.

I wasn't sure if I made the biggest mistake of my life or got a gem.
Luckily, I got a gem.

I don't recommend buying a car without seeing it first but in my case
I had a good feeling and the seller posted over 100 photos of it.

The shipper, that was a different story.

I bought a tall unicycle off e-bay and it came with a bent frame.
Too bad there are a$$holes out there who intentionally sell stuff they know is NFG without telling the truth about the condition.

I have also paid for a couple things and they have never arrived.
The close to 100 things I have bough on ebay have worked out well except a couple.

Too bad anyone has a bad situation.

At least my car story is a good one !!!

I agree with Darren on this one, Im a little cold about buying a car on the web too. pictures can be modified or pictured from very far.. or as we say in Quebec, the car is a "20 feets" .. mean it's nice at 20 feets but at 2... ready for the junk! Always depends of the honesty of the seller. I heard stories of a car with only one picture on Ebay, reasonnable bids offered and the other side of the car not pictured was completely smashed.

I bought all my vintage cars with road tests and knowing the sellers personnaly.. or the car itself. Same for the parts, I rarely buy from the web, you never know whick part will be missing when shipped.

Buying on the Bay is great, but the website changed over the years. Im a member since 2000 or near and the rules haves changed. As I said before, back in 2000 you were able to bid on 1941 sarin gas cans... full !! That's another story.

Worked well for me.....

Sold my 74 Criterion HERE on this board....Dr. Tamsen (San Diego) got on the board and said he wanted a restored Caddy ambulance immediately. He had me overnight him a video (from FL to CA). The next day he sent me a check.

Sold my 66 GMC rescue truck on ebay to a truck dealer in St. Pete, FL (an hour from here). It's currently owned by a fire chief in Pinellas County.

Bought my 68 Rescuer via this board from Bill Shannon in AL. It had been Tony Karsnia's daily driver when he was in middle school. Sold it on my own website (buyer was googling).

Bought my Pirsch fire engine on ebay. The seller belonged to no vehicle clubs and used the truck for advertising.

Bought my '35 chevy on Hemmings.

Sold a Volvo on ebay.

Found my own two current daily drivers on ebay although I bought them after the auctions were over. They were both in my local area.

I am confident that a seller and a buyer who belong to the same club should have a great transaction when buying sight-unseen.

Good luck
Kevin

Accidentally purchased?

I have (had) a Mercury Marauder on ebay. Early this morning, a guy who is a car dealer in Alabama "accidentally" hit the buy-it-now button. He said he meant to hit the "watch it" button. So I cancelled the sale and had to re-list the car. I wanted the auction to end Sunday evening (that's the best time for Americans to be home) but I guess now it will last another week. Oh well.
