Being pulled over by a hearse sends a message: Don’t text and drive

In a week-long campaign called “That Text or Call Could End It All,” police will be pulling over distracted drivers in a funeral vehicle.

Sirens and red-and-blue flashing lights in your rearview mirror are sure to provoke a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.

But how much worse would you feel if the cop pulling you over was driving a lurching hearse, complete with a casket on board?

It could happen if you dare to text and drive this week, as Toronto police team up with a local funeral home to send a macabre message: You could end up dead.

In a campaign called “That Text or Call Could End It All,” police are using a hearse to pull over distracted drivers. It’s the result of a lot of brainstorming on ideas to get the message across that texting at the wheel is “essentially impaired driving,” said Const. Clint Stibbe, of Traffic Services.

Police partnered with Leaside funeral services provider MacKinnon & Bowes to borrow the hearse.

“It’s not uncommon that ideas are going back and forth [with police] all the time,” said the funeral company’s Jim Price. He said they often support events such as this, most recently with a drinking and driving campaign.

“If you’re driving on the highway and you see the police car on the road, you tend to slow down,” Price said. Using a hearse is another way to catch drivers who are breaking the law off-guard.

“We told them what our idea was, and they fully supported it,” Stibbe said.

According to police, three traffic fatalities have been directly linked to distracted driving in the past two years. Between 2010 and 2012, about 55,000 people were charged.

Distracted driving includes texting and driving, holding your phone and talking, and playing on your device at a stoplight. Unless you’re stopped with the car in “park” on the side of the road or in a parking lot, you can be charged, Stibbe said.

The campaign launched Monday morning outside the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Front St. The effect was what police were hoping for.

“Usually the first reaction was the drop of the phone — and then the jaw dropping, because they couldn’t believe they were getting pulled over by a hearse,” he said.

Stibbe said that often, when drivers are pulled over and shown footage of their vehicle swerving on the road as a result of distracted driving, they’re surprised.

“One guy said, ‘I can’t believe it was that bad.’”

But not everyone appreciates that police would use such an extreme measure as a hearse to make a point.

There are some people who don’t like the use of it,” he said. “You have to imagine that some people have some discomfort with seeing something like that.”

However, Stibbe said it’s not presented in bad taste; it’s just very matter-of-fact. Even if people don’t necessarily agree with the idea, the message is clear.

“If somebody’s talking about it, they’re thinking about it, then we’ve done what we needed to do.”

The campaign runs until Sunday.

I'm guilty of doing it but last week took me almost 5 hrs making a 22 yr old look presentable after being run over by a woman txting while driving.

I know lets pas a law agents it. that worked so well with alcohol. none of them on the road anymore at all. there to afrade of getting run over with some kid texting. what part of addiction don't people understand. how about a drunk, smoking Mary Jane while texting. might as will cover all bases while your at it.

but man it would have been fun to been driving that Hearse!!! all this stuff really reminds me of the guts on the road driving assemblies we had in the 60s. that did not work either. you want to stop it. make the price high enough. you get caught texing while driven you lose your license for life. now that won't stop it either but it will cut back on repeat offenders. kind of like those drunks that have lost theirs. once again what part of addictive behavior don't you understand.

I don't how anyone can text from their smart phones while driving... I can't even text well while sitting on a park bench!

Ive always said they need to do something like that where I live with speeders, not to say it can be over, but just to snag them. The speed limit is 55, I go about 60 and cars fly by me like I am in reverse, and yes there is a lot of wrecks on that highway. I would love to just flip on the lights and nail them.
Too bad this no texting campaign will do nothing. Look at all the drunks that are still on the road, no campaign or ads stopped them. You see posts on facebook all the time of a wreck supposedly caused by texting. Guess what, people still do it. I don't know how many times my cars have about been smacked by one of these idiots.
We have a law in our area its illegal to text and drive, BUT you cannot be pulled over for it, they have to stop you for something else first (speeding, eat belt, etc). Still haven't figured out whats the point of that one. I don't understand the texting thing either, its a phone, talk to them. If you want to take 3 times as long to type out what you want to say, sit at a computer.

+1

So we're clear: I agree with you completely. The portion of your post that I quoted sums up my take on texting as well, and couldn't have been said better.

In Dallas for some reason they think the left lane is the cell phone/texting lane. They move over then slow down. What is so important they can't wait?

I agree that if you need to talk to someone just call them.

it looks like this time around the law makes are final going to put one more useless law threw to keep the "we got to have" crowd at bay. it will now be illegal to tex and drive in SD it will be a secondary stop and the fine will be 25 bucks. so feel say to be on the road here there is now a law to protect you.

a friend called me recently to see if i had any plans for that afternoon as he and his wife were having some prople over and he was inviting me. knowing that he had recently moved, i said sure, but whats your address now? his response to me was ...... I'll text it to you! Now mind you, we were already TALKING on the phone! Why couldnt he just TELL me while he had me on the phone?

but if he texed it to you you would have it on your phone. if your memory is as short as mine it might have been handy. that is unless your like me and can't figure out how to read a tex.

That's the same kind of stupid law we have here I mentioned earlier. No idea what the point even is. The only thing possibly any good about it is it may help with a collision insurance claim.

Texting the CB Radio of the twenty first century, Yesterday while having lunch at a local eatery in comes mom leading what I guess was her 15 to 19 year old male offspring, This kid was 6 foot 4 inches skinny as a rail and holding his I Pad about 10 inches from his face in a trance. If mom was not leading him he would have walked in to the wall. They sat down and the kid never stopped his zombie stare till the food came. I have no issue with texting on my phone I had it shut off. I can't handle those little keys

Matthew do not worry they have red lights and uniformed drivers and they can radio ahead and get lots of regular cruisers to get ya,then you get lots of tickets, just wonder what a judge would say ?

You should not get anymore tickets if you don't stop for an unmarked car, red lights or not. Anyone can buy red lights and impersonate a cop, its happened here. They tell you if you do not feel safe to stop don't, until you go to a well lit public area, and/or call 911 to see if the car behind you is legit before stopping.
