Hey everyone, its been quite some time since I was on here! I had a lot of health problems the last couple of months and lost my job and had no way to get on here due to being in the hospital. While I was out my cousin had taken my '75 Superior to a few car shows he said that she drove fine and he had paid to get the brakes and everything tuned up. He told me that the next weekend he went over and got my keys to take her to another show like I had told him to do since I couldn't and he told me that she wouldn't go into drive but she would go into low gear, I told him to put tranny fluid in her while she was warmed up and let her run in nutral to let the fluid get around. It still wouldn't go into drive but also would not go into low gear again but she still went in reverse. I had her taken into a transmission shop here in town a week ago and they found that the transmission's bands and everything had been deteriorating over the years. Well my question is would it be better to go ahead and get this brand new transmission from a friend of mine that he has discounted to $200.00 or should I pay almost a grand for a new one from Orielly Auto Parts? Anything helps!!

A rebuilt transmission is only as good as the person that rebuilt it does the work. The one from the parts store was probably rebuilt by a production shop that reuses everything that they can and only replaces a worn out part with another used part, and many times, they mix and match parts, just to get the job finished. Because of this, they usually have a short warranty, and are less expensive than having a local shop disassemble, and replace all worn parts on the original transmission. If it fails in the warranty period, then you will just get another "rebuilt" in exchange. There are a lot of very reliable re builders out there, but you don't know where the auto parts store is sourcing the transmission from, and you don't know if they purchase based on price or quality. As an example Jasper transmissions are well rebuilt transmissions. Since this is a "crap shoot" (slang term for a street dice game) I would go with the $200 transmission, as long as you know that it was working properly when it was removed.

if the re built one your buddy has came from a locale shop get it. if it came from the box store 200 is 800 better for the same junk. for the reasons Paul stated.
the only question I would have is why did your buddy buy a tranny and not use it? now me I have never done anything like that

Well, he gets older cadillacs and if they are in good condition he replaces the engine and tranny with new ones and re sales them. He sold a 76 to a guy and the engine started acting up so he bought it back and offered the new transmission to me. I'm stuck and I really don't know what to do!
