Barn Finds- Who is Looking for a Car?

Ron Devies

PCS Ohio Chapter President PCS Past Vice President
Recently I was contacted by a man who needed to move his Cotner Bevington Cottington Combination from a garage where it has sat for probably close to 40 years. It is now in my driveway. He has to sell the car and quite frankly it is beyond my pay grade to keep. Anyway here are the pictures. When I know more I will make a post in the sale section, but for right now I am not even sure what year it is. However anyone interested contact me because I want to get it out of my driveway.

I would like to make a bid on the sign in the back window. :D

You seem to be the home of wayward pro-cars....

Well if it was a straight hearse I probably would have said so what. But because it is a combination and they are not made anymore, I try to save what I can even if it is for a parts car. But yes, I am a sucker for them.

I gave your telephone number to a couple of guys that I know over at the Oldsmobile forum. They are interested in the car to build a rat rod out of it. They asked if I thought that $3500 - $4000 would buy it. I told them to contact you and make the offer.

That would be a shame, don't do it!

If they are willing to give $3,500-$4,000 for it, you would be a fool not to sell it to them!

Few people, if anyone, would put the money into this coach that it would require to restore it properly anyway.

If we are talking purely dollars, you are clearly correct Kurt. However, these cars are getting harder to find and once they are gone, they are gone forever. It was unlikely that anyone would spend the money to restore it, but isn't that what we do?

I would much rather see it rodded, than left to rot into the ground behind some dreamer's garage. I just don't see anyone spending 35 grand to restore this coach. At least this one has been stored under a roof to-date.

now me I would reserve judgment on the ability to restore or not when I saw the car, If I was looking for one of these. it may only be a parts car it may be worth salvaging those questions will only be answered with a inspection. and a good assessment of your abilities.

I will say Ron has one that did not look much better then this when I got it. it took both of us to finish it. it can be done but you have to want the car first.

Were this a '70 C-B ambulance in the same condition, it would be a different story. An ambulance will always be more sought-after/valuable than a hearse or combination in the same condition, given the same model year, chassis, and manufacturer.

I wouldn't mind having a Cottington Combination but this one is out of my ability. It is a good parts car. Interior is in good shape, glass is all good front clip isn't bad. Someone actually restore it, it seems straight, rear quarters are swiss cheese but I have seen worse. I think it is a 5-800 car, but if someone wanted it it may go for less. I know I want it out of my driveway!

Well, I am not going to buy this car, but I will say that these are nice running and driving cars, with the legendary Olds 455 Rocket engine. It seems to me that you could bring this car back and I think combinations are worth saving, after all, they offer two cars in one, some might say, the best of both worlds. Just my two cents worth.

but will the tires hold air? and will it run? if I was closer I would help out. the inside storage has keep the interior good. that along is worth 5 grad. the front clip is not in need. I take it the doors just have rust hickies on them? but the quarters are bad. all the trim is there and in decent shape. all the glass is good. sounds salvageable to me. and they are not making anymore combos either.

the Wayne built CBs had a water gets in problen in the quarters. my 72 has had the one side patched twice now. this one still has the original krinkle top, the removable panels. so it quarters fixed moldings buffed and rust killed. 4 new shoes and what ever you have to do to get the been sitting out of the drive train. might be a lot might be nothing see them go both ways.

price is right to do it moving expenses will be more then the car.

one looks at it realistically just say a grand for the car 2 to get it home 6 to paint it a grand for each quarter a grand to get it up and running absent of a major problem. toss in a extra 2 grand for miscellaneous stuff 600 to re plate the bumpers. and realistically you could have this car at a meet in first place condition for about the 15 thousand that it would possibly bring.

gold and black love to see it at the 19 meet

I don't know where you keep seeing gold, Ed. The coach is really far more green than gold. Not sure what Oldsmobile called it in 1970, but they called it "Willow Gold Metallic" in 1968. It is even far greener than the Tarragon Gold that was originally on my '75 Victoria.
