A Memorial Day thanks

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Freedom is not free. Too many protestors have forgotten that very phrase. Too many congressmen have forgotten that phrase.

When I see a foreigner burn our flag, I think of a dangerous regeim.

When you see an American burn our flag, what do you think of?

Many, many thanks to all the men & women who have proudly served in our armed forces.

I have said it before and I will say it again "if you don't feel the need to stand behind our troops,by all means stand in front of them".

On this Memorial Day, like always, I will be paying respect to my cousin, Lt. Wallace R. Franklin USN July 10,1950 to Oct 11, 1976. You will never be forgotten, Wally!

:893USA-Smilie-thumbwant to be on the news? TRY BURNING MY COUNTRYS FLAG IN FRONT OF ME!!! guarenteed spot on the news. 15 minutes of fame and a size 12 where a proctologist will have to remove it.

all gave some, some gave all. tomorrow is the day for those that gave all. it not a white sale or the best deal on a new car day as business will have you think. it's true life if for the living. but one day out of 365 and 1/4 is not a lot to ask for one to pause and say thank you for your sacrifice for me.

Isn't that traditionally how you are supposed to get rid of old tattered flags? Most of our flags are now made in China. Pretty bad we can not even make our own anymore.

This post is NOT intended to offend, of start anything in any way, I just always heard this is what you are supposed to do with old flags, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, that is how old tattered flags are to be disposed of HOWEVER there is a very solemn and proper ceremony that is involved. NOT to be done by some dumbass as a sign of disrespect to our country. That person gets a boot right in the keester if done in front of me also, fact they would be very lucky if that's all that happened to them.

You are right, but it must be done respectfully, and not as a public show, FYI contact scout groups or legion branch as the may do this, apparently usually done on June 14 flag day.hopefully this is right and please correct me if I am wrong..:respect:

a lot of time the scouts will collect old flags and have a disposal ceremony. other veterans clubs have a collection for proper disposal to. me I got a collection in the top shelf of my closet waiting for the time.
but some jerk water want to make there mark burning it on a collage campus or wear it as a patch on the seat of there pants it's all the same to me. all you can hope is that they get a turn around. most do by expanding there horizons and discovering that in the big pictures no one really cares what they think.

proper flag disposale

yes, flags should be burned at american legion or vfw hall. not set in stone but thats the most respectfull way in my opinion. my wifes grandmother was the past national commander of the american legion aux. and she had a peculiar habit. if she seen a tattered flag she would return with a new flag and trade them out. she would stockpile them until flag day and then they would have a very respectfull flag burning at the post. my wife was given a membership into the legion at 7 years old and has been a member of her grandmothers post for 42 years. uh oh told the wifes age, hope she dont read this. respect for our flag should be a given to us that look upon it as a symbol of our country. i see it and swell with pride EVERY time. for my canadian friends i say i would give your flag the same respect because after all we are cousins...
