A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to

Ron Devies

PCS Ohio Chapter President PCS Past Vice President
So this morning was just another day but TGIF. I was going through my normal routine, get in the car late and head for the next jurisdiction to get breakfast at McDonald's. Well that was the drill but I am in Hartville when I look up and what is coming at me but a 1973 Chevrolet Suburban High Headroom Ambulance! I whipped my unmarked around in the next parking lot and took off after the east bound ambulance. It pulled into the car wash on W. Maple street, I followed and it went around the building and back west bound on Maple. I am thinking this is great, I am going to have to light it up to pull this thing over in a place that is not even my jurisdiction, good thing their Chief is a friend of mine. Just as I was reaching for the switch to my LEDs the ambulance pulled into Auto Zone. I followed and jumped out of the cruiser and demanded to know where they got that car!!!!!!!!!!! ....................and can I buy it????? pplease??????:wwpics:
The front seat passenger somewhat caught off guard as the young driver circled around behind him as if to hide started to explain he was a member of the Ohio Chapter of the Profes.............I cut him off right there and said, Look, I know all about that stuff I am the president" with that he said, "Oh Ron!" and I said, "Mark!" It was Mark Jordan and it was my first sight of the burb he took delivery of last year. This thing is is awesome, needs some of this and a little of that but it is awesome! Wait till you see the pics as I believe it will be at pro car night at the drive in tomorrow night.

Oh and no he would not sell it to me :snow2_smi:

Too Funny!

Thats too funny, Ron.....I can just picture you following him and can imagine what he was thinking seeing an unmarked patrol car following him!

I thought that all cops ate donuts for breakfast......... :myopinion: :wwpics:

I can see it in my mind; you light him up and he pulls to the curb. You approach the driver and say "driver's license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and PCS membership number please!" It's the law in Ohio, don't you know?

That's funny. It's a small world.

Until he came over to the house, Randy Loy (PCS member here in Mt. Airy) used to call me and say, "Hey, I just saw an ambulance at the tire store." And I'd say, "Yeah, I know, I dropped it off there this morning." That happened a couple times before he saw all my cars and realized which were mine. Then he'd call and say, "Hey, I just passed one on the road that wasn't your's." And I'd tell him who's it was! :smiley3:

I thought that all cops ate donuts for breakfast.........
Nah, usually they eat McMuffins for breakfast, the donuts are for the rest of the day/night. :bonk:

My usual is a Egg McMuffin, lg. coffee two creams in. I have gone to the breakfast burrito as I am trying to cut the starch out of the diet. The car is an awesome behemouth of a burbulance, really a cool car.:weneedpics_smi:

Hey Ron, Clarification please !!

On the local news last night, they said there is a new law in Ohio that police officers can now write speeding tickets in Ohio by just guessing at your speed.
Sounds like easy money for Cedar Pont bound Michiganders !!:3_7_11v::drama::gun2_smi:

Wondered if they'd ever get that one to fly! The State Highway Patrol in my county have been trying that for YEARS... the main state route that takes you directly to Cedar Point runs right through my town so the Cedar Point & Lake Erie traffic is VERY heavy. The local OSP post writes bogus tickets all the time, they will ticket you but won't show you the radar. Last time I got nailed I contested it based on this because I wasn't speeding. The Judge said "There's an easy solution to all this... Trooper Williams will you please insert your in-car camera footage into the video system? Mr. Brooks, all their cruisers have in-car cameras." His only reply was "I lost it" and I replied "Isn't that convenient?" The judge banged his gavel & asked for no more smart comments... and let me off based on no evidence. So this passed huh? Only in Ohio... (rolls eyes)

In MA, they write "visually estimated" on the ticket if they can't get a good reading on you with radar or by following you. I know that they have been doing this since 1974, since back then, I got a speeding ticket. I contested it and in court, I asked the officer if he had a radar gun with his cruiser that day, and he replied yes. I challenged him to estimate the speed of the cars going by the court house to determine his accuracy. He declined, and the case was dropped. Now, in MA, you get a "hearing" in front of a court clerk first that determines your guilt, which means most of the times, that you are guilty automatically. Then if you want to go before a judge, you have to pay $50 court costs, and you don't get that back even if you are found innocent. The system is rigged so you pay the state no matter what.

There isn't a "new law." This new slant on what is required to cite for speeding comes from a 5-1 decision from the Ohio Supreme Court on 6-2-10, in which the majority basically said that an officer's experience makes it possible for him or her to issue the citation, sans any real proof. At least that is how I read it. Put "Ohio Supreme Court speeding ticket decision" in a search and see what you think.

In Perspective

Jim is right the Ohio Supreme Court recently upheld a case where the officer estimated speed on a citation. I could not believe they did that. However we do train cadets in the academy to do speed estimations when we are doing radar training. They get pretty good at it "guessing" within 5 miles of the actual radar reading. HOWEVER, I do not allow my officers to issue citations based on estimation or pacing. I will only let them write on certified radar observation. A democrat and republican right now are drafting a bill that will ban estimation based citations, so that is the good news. I am not sure what the boys with the flying donut on the door are doing though.:toocool:

Ron, That really made my day! You really did catch me off guard. As soon as you got out, all I saw was "uniform" and figured it was HPD going to harass me about the red lights. I was greatly relieved to find out it was Ron.
My 16 year old driver would have probably freaked-out if you had pulled us over. we drove to Canton and backwith no problems and now a new muffler!See ya at the movies!

Mark are there any pictures you can post of this magnificent car? If everyone saw it they would understand my desire to go into pursuit to get a look at it. By the way, last night was our FOP Lodge's steak fry and the Hartville Chief was there and I was telling him the story. He has given me the green light to stop any and all vintage ambulances coming through his jurisdiction.:wwpics:

You all may remember the PCS's involvement several years ago in the funeral for Robert "Orbs" Tiedemann, the "Ambulance Man" here in Seattle. His story and funeral drew a fair amount of edia attention here and the day of the funeral I had several calls from friends telling me that "There was a hearse exactly like mine " on the news that day being used for his funeral. I had to laugh as i replied "that WAS my hearse!"

I'm working today and won't be able to post until tomorrow. I may have to email them to you so you can post for me . I sometimes have trouble doing that. Thanks.
