a/c compressor locked up

My ac/ps belt broke Sat. on my 73 Cadillac hearse. I changed all the belts and cranked Her up and the a/c compressor is locked up. I was going to try and get a belt for a non a/c car and bypass the a/c, until I could get the a/c fixed. I went to some local parts stores today, but the computers only has a belt for a/c cars. Is there anything other than changing the compressor, I can do? I plan to get the a/c fixed, but don't really need it now.

If you unplug the power connector from the clutch on the front of the compressor it should just freewheel. If it's still locked up you're clutch is bad. A bad clutch would cause the compressor to run continuously and eventually seize.

or the bearing in the clutch has frozen. so your into a guess. run a tape around the pulleys skipping the AC. this will give you a rough Ida how big a belt you will need. the father down into the pulleys you get the tap the closer you measurement will be. then go down and ask for a belt that size or a little smaller. if I remember right with out going out to look one of the components your going around will have some adjustment. they did make Caddies in the CC with out AC. the 71 superior I had was that way

The people at the parts stores said to use a string and that's what I did. I had to go back and get a few inches bigger, but got it and it's on. I got a 47" to fit, but a 48" would have been a little easier to put on. I know of a few people in Ga that have 70's hearse with no a/c. I don't know how they can handle that in Ga.

Living in South Carolina in the summer is just as bad as the summer heat in Georgia... As for knowing "how they can handle that", I am sure that you will learn how, if you don't get the air conditioning fixed before then.. :D
