Steve... I already have a Corvair ambulance that needs restoring, so this should be in your collection. Attila posted about this a while ago, and I am no more impressed with the car today than I was 10+ years ago. Putting a boat seat in for an attendants seat, isn't my idea of a correct restoration, and that is just the beginning of the problems in my opinion. The only thing that car has going for it, is the fact that it was the first Corvair FC ambulance for 1962. Ten years ago, it was offered for sale for $9000, and it was too much for the car then, and $29400 is way overpriced in my opinion today. The 1962 Greenbriar ambulance that was all original with 3000 miles on it, sold for $14000 about 6 years ago, and by comparison, that was a much better deal.

Paul, this may be the same one that sold 6 years ago that you are speaking of. I spoke to the owner around 5-6 years ago shortly after she purchased it from Bob McDorman Chevrolet, and posted pictures of it on the old website. The McDorman vehicles are generally top-notch, but I agree the price is steep, especially when you consider it was purchased in a still booming economy for half that.

McDermott purchased it because he collected vehicles with very low number, usually straiting with 000001, which this car is. I don't know if he did any work on it, but when I drove it, it was jumping out of gear (it is a 3 speed(from memory)), and there was a chip in the windshield right in your line of sight. It had more roll in it than a baby carriage because of worn shocks, and the rust repair was more a cosmetic patch than a proper rust repair. When the van was found, it had belonged to a painter that used it for carrying paint and ladders. The interior was removed for his needs, so there is nothing original on the interior from ACC except for the glove box emblem. This is my opinion of the car, and others might disagree with my conclusions about it. As we all know, not everyone sees these cars in the same light, and opinions vary.

Sorry I suggested it...

I haven't seen the car, I don't know any more about it than a few pics and the ad. I agree the price is steep, but then there is usually some room for negotiation.
