Ok peeps, up for auction is a 1959 Superior Cadillac Crown Royale Funeral Coach. This was about the pinnacle for funeral cars for this year, which is already hands down, the most sought after. As near as we can tell in collectors circles, this is one of approx 7 examples left. This is a Landau with a partition and suicide doors and according to the body code 604, is technically a combo because of the linen cabinet and flippable rollers, though it has no capacity for ambulance service. It being a Crown means it has the half textures top and the angular C pillars Ive had this car for about ten years and have done a lot since that time but Im just not finding myself with the time or space to restore it properly. It's a complete car that runs and drives. I wouldn't recommend driving it any distance until you've had a chance top go over everything well, its only been driven a handful of miles in the last two decades. The tires are very old. I would absolutely not recommend trying to drive it home. Trailer or arrange shipping. Its shows 70k on the odometer but I have no way to verify that.
It's a complete car, it's the real deal and it's available. In all reality, this is likely your only chance to purchase a 59 Crown anywhere. It runs pretty decent, compression was good, it shifts well and stops well enough for driving around the property. The carb that's on there isn't anything great, just an edelbrock, but the original goes with it, along with the original air cleaner. The glass is all good including the corner windows and rear door glass which are specific to Superior and the windshield is good, which while available from all coachbuilders is still a rarity as its hearse, flower car and ambulance only. The trim not on the car is inside. The car comes with a spare front bumper that's better than the one you see, a spare grill, original carb, generator and regulator, many spare tune up parts that are NOS, a set of hubcaps, spare column and gear box, air cleaner, and a few others, as well as a few interior parts from other cars. Also included is an unusable (due to rust) rear door with good glass and a pair of corner windows. The trim over the left corner window will need to be mended. Most all the chrome is a good candidate to be redone. The body is pretty straight with a few dents here and there but nothing too bad. You can see them in the photos. The battery in it isn't correct for 59 but its new and starts the car. It has a pair of fender skirts in the back along with some pare interior windshield trim, which is hearse only. I also have a pair of 59 fin skins in the rear from another car.
It was originally a black car with a black top and green interior but at some point in its life someone covered the door and interior panels in blue and white vinyl. The headliner was missing but the bows are there. The drapes are just some temporary ones I threw in, the originals are long gone but the rods and hardware are all there. The horn ring is broken, which is typical.
It has some rust, the bottoms of the quarters, the rockers and the floor pans will need metal sectioned in. The worst of the rust was covered with patch panels and filler added before the black primer was sprayed on. It doesn't look bad and honestly I was going to leave it this way a while but for the sake of full disclosure, when its restored it'll need some attention to be perfect. The floor pans have some galvanized sheet steel laid down, again, just as a temporary fix as it slowly get worked on. Overall, it's not perfect and it'll need a lot of attention but is an absolute fantastic candidate. The frame is in great shape, solid, and the body mount points all seem to be ok. I sprayed the underside with a rust converting primer and then with a black epoxy primer to stop the rust and prevent it from getting worse.
You may absolutely contact me to make an appointment to see the car in person and I highly suggest you do if you can. No holds, it needs to be picked up within two weeks of the close of auction. All sales are final on this one. I have to move this car due to losing my location and I won't have time to relist so make certain you want it and you're comfy with your bid amount. Ill do my best to remember everything that's wrong but if any kind of surprise is an issue, this is likely not the car for you. To be perfect it'll need all kinds of little stuff. All the doors open and close well.
Overall its a very, very rare car, gorgeous body lines and the apex of funeral car design. There's a reason the 59 always commanded higher prices than 58 or 60's.
Feel free to message with any questions. Any picture requests I'll do my best to get out there and it helps if you need something specific. Please, request pictures before you bid, not after. If you can't see the car in person ahead of time and choose to buy anyway, that's fine, Ill do my best to answer questions to the best of my ability but all sales are final. Most people in the collector world of these kinds of cars are used to that but some people aren't.
Within 24 hours of the auction close I need a 1000 dollar deposit and full payment on the balance within 4 days of auction close via wire transfer from your bank or cash in person. No apps or payment services on a car like this. Any and all payments will need to fully process before the title is sent or the car is picked up. |
