What do you think my Criterion has in it? 472 or 500? I was talking to a PCS member last night who believes it has the 500 engine.

Thoughts?

the 74 has the 500 the only difference in they is the size of the combustion chamber. the dished pistons and bigger dome on the heads make it a 500. they were a dog when they put them in the Eldorado and remained so till they were scraped. but the mystique of having 500 cubs made it a sought over engine were the 68 and 9 472 had a lot more power. but then I'm not a caddy man I may be off a year.

500

I am going to say 500. Most folks I know that either own or have owned a 75 or 76 Cadillac Pro-car or regular chasis car had 500's in them.

ED The 74 still had the 472. 1975 and 6 had the less powerful 500. The 76 had less power than the 75 because of all the emission B.S. and was told it was also detuned.

500

The 1975's and 1976's had 500 cu in motors. 1975 was the first year of the square headlights, so the Criterion fits in to the 75/76 category.

The 500's were detuned due to the gas crisis at the time. My stock '75 Sedan deVille (with a 500) has 190 SAE horsepower at 4,000 rpm.

You can find more engine specs for the 1975 500 motor in the sales brochure:

I've never heard that the '75 500 was different than the '76 500 - as John states - but, hey, ya' never know.....

Is this a truck question? We have no idea if the original engine is in this car or not.

That said, this car was shipped from the factory with a 500.

5th digit in VIN # should be 'S' for 500 cu. in.

Like everyone else has said, it's a detuned 500 with a Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor, unless the engine isn't the original one or has been replaced by a 472....there should be a casting number on a machined pad just below the RH cylinder head towards the front of the engine block. If I'm not mistaken, Wikipedia has that info on the website under 'Cadillac V8 Engine'. Hope this helps.....:my2cents:
