Please visit my website and click on the 35 Buick hearse button. Lew Hall, owner of Gentry-Morrison Funeral Homes in Lakeland, FL, had a 35 Buick Meteor restored. It is now white and the wood panels are brown. You can also follow a link on my links page to the car and see a video of the restoration. The restoration was complete a few weeks ago and he has already used the car for one service.
Enjoy!

Such a beautiful carved panel Meteor, I like everything about it. Nice touch on having all the wood natural & not painted, very beautiful details in the carvings. The VDO retro-brass gauges & ididit chrome steering column look right at home in it. The more modern Chevy driveline is hidden under the hood so it's very driveable & not a trailer queen, a coach restored to have fun with AND put back to work! This is EXACTLY how i'd build a carved panel hearse if I ever am lucky enough to own one. Well done & thanks so much for sharing Kevin!

Nice car, but........

It would have looked a lot better if it had been restored to its original appearance, in which the panels were painted the body color. Its much to garish like this.

Painted Carvings

Buicks from the early '30's were beautiful, no doubt. I respectfully disagree with Brady about painting over the draperies, as original. I would agree if they were stamped metal, but I think showing off the carved wood is really great. It's no secret that my '39 Eureka LaSalle was originally black, and the draperies were black also. When funeral director Finley McGinnis purchased the car in 1972, and proceeded to have it painted his company color, the body shop began to sand the black paint off the wood carvings. Seeing the beautiful wood beneath, the body man called Finley, and the decision was made to put only a light clear coat over the wood, showing it in its natural state, and painting around it. I love the way it looks, and the natural inclination for people seeing the wood carvings, of course, is to reach out and touch.

As a side note, I was recently able to speak on the phone with the grandson of Sanford Stewart, who carved the panels on my Eureka. The grandson is 73 years old. Tom
