1973 S&S-Cadillac High Body on display at Nebraska Fire Museum

Nicholas Studer

PCS Elected Director 2022-2025
The Nebraska Fire Museum has kindly looked into my 1963 Norfolk Fire Dept. GMC rescue ambulance in the past. While perusing their website, I saw their latest traveling exhibit a 1973 Professional High Body from the Uehling, NE VFD. Apparently in-service to some extent until the late-1990s. Looks well-taken care of and fairly unmolested - not an electronic siren in sight! :D

Steve Loftin posted a photograph of this car previously at http://www.professionalcarsociety.org/forums/showpost.php?p=29622&postcount=2

The Director there is very friendly, and I suggested she visit the website and perhaps the Museum might consider joining PCS.

Years ago, I would see old ambulances sitting on Smeal's lot across the street from their manufacturing facility in the tiny town of Snyder, NE. Not sure if they had been taken in on trade, or just served as a driver to get them to the plant to pick up their new truck.

I remember inspecting that car when I was with State EMS. The only thing I did not like was the pea green interior. Other than that its a great car.

That is my absolute favorite interior in any S&S ambulance! It must have had a white or green exterior originally. That is the same interior as in Mac Gilpin's '71 S&S. This '73 just needs to be painted the same exterior color as Gilpin's '71 S&S! I am going to have to stop for a visit next month when I am out that way!

Uehling

The folks in Uehling were visited on a couple occasions, at least, by enthusiasts hoping to get a look at their Cadillac ambulance. I photographed the car in the spring of 1995 during a hunting trip out west. At that time, this spectacular S&S was still in service, seeing occasional use as a transfer vehicle.

A very nice gentleman by the name of Ron Madison met us at the ambulance garage / fire department that day, kindly pulling the rig out for photography. He explained that Uehling had purchased the car a number of years earlier from the original owner, Tekamah, NE.

As for the interior, I would call it more of a mint green. To me, it resembled the old "hospital green," appropriate for this rig, which was an emergency room on wheels in her day.

While many municipalities were eager to get rid of their old ambulances, Uehling seemed to "know what they had" and were in no hurry to part with this car.
