1967 June Update

The work continues on the 67. I have not been as productive as I wanted to this winter, so there are a lot of small things left to do.

Heater Control:
Since I got the care on the road in May, I partially fixed the issues I had with the heater controls. The dial that controls the fan was broken. It is attached to the control knob with a string, and the string was broken. That is now fixed. The only item left to do on the heater control is to replace the small clip that keeps the heater cable casing from moving.

Electrical Wiring
While I had the heater controls out of the dash, I thought that it would be a good idea to look at the Superior wiring that runs from the various switches, lights, etc , goes under the dash and then through the fire wall. The wiring was a mess, mostly because each one of the wires were at least two feet too long and were all bunched-up like spaghetti. I cut most of the wires to length and replace the connectors. All connectors that I replaced were soldered and finished off with automotive shrink-wrap. It took me a while, but I am now pretty good with soldering.

Pulsating lights
I had an issue with pulsating lights. When driving, the headlights would pulsate, when I had the signal lights on, they pulsated more. The dash lights were also pulsating. This phenomenon always there, but not regular. Even thoughtThe alternator is less than one year old, I still had it tested, and it passed with flying colors. Because of the inconsistency of the pulsating, I suspected something loose somewhere. After looking at all the wires and connections that I could think about, I found that the connector on the alternator that comes from the batteries was loose, so I tighten that up. I also found that probably ¾ of the ground straps were either broken or loose. Fixed that too. Since I have done this, no more pulsating lights.

Front End
Motor Vehicle Inspection: Here in New Brunswick, we need to get our vehicles inspected once a year. The garage I go to found that the Upper Control Arm Bushings, Ball Joints, Sway Bar Link and Tie Rod Ends needed to be replaced. That probably explains some of the clunking noises coming out of the front end. No big deal, except that we cannot get a local supplier that carries these parts, the car being 44 years old American model. I was able to source then from a relative South of the border. They should arrive early next week.

Drive Shaft
The drive shaft is starting to make the usual noises when the U-Joints need replacement. It is in the shop now to have the U-Joints and carrier bearing replaced.

Exhaust
The Y pipes will need to be replaced, as they are getting thin, and there is a crack in the exhaust manifold. Something for later this summer

Coolant:
This morning I noticed some coolant that has leaked on the passenger side floor. Something else to look into.

Look into the coolant on the floor ASAP. Its either a heater hose loose at the heater core, or a leaking heater core. Both will leave you stranded on the side of the road.

Update

Front end
Received the parts this week, had them installed and had the car aligned. Drives like a new car.

Drive Shaft
I was unable to find a replacement for the carrier bearing assembly. The guys at the drive shaft place replaced the rubber inside of the bearing assembly. That should last for a while. I will look at it again once the car is parked for the winter to see how we can permanantly fix this problem.

Coolant
The leak was caused by a hole in the heater core. I got a new one on Friday and hope to have it installed this weekend.

July Update

Rear Heater
Finaly got it to work. Replaced the fan and the motor, re-connected the wires and voila! Just like new!

Cot
Replaced and lubricated the cot bar, and added a second cot bar on the passenger side. Two cot configuration here we come!

Ceiling Fan
Not working at all. Will need to be replaced.

I believe (hope) that most of what still needs to be done on the car are relatively small things except for the issue of water leaking in the car.

I will need to remove and install the rear side windows again, because right now all they do is re-direct rain water from outside to inside. The windows leak behind the trim and the water ends up in the wheel well area. Yesterday, in order to dry out the water that seeped in, I left a trouble light in each wheel well for a few hours to dry them out. No wonder that there is so much rust in those area.

The back door window also leaks and keeps the water in the door like if it was a rain barrel. I had to drill holes to let the water escape, but it still accumulates, so I guess that I will have to drill a few more drainage holes.

As for the Ohio meet, I will be taking a rain check, so take a lot of pictures...

Send a message to Aaron Greene here on the board about your carrier bearing. He replaced his a couple years ago at the Flint meet, and he is good at finding obsolete Pontiac parts.
