1964 Superior Combo paint queston

I am in the paint restoring era of my 1964 Superior Combo. As my body guy was stripping/sanding car, he brought to my attention that the top (everything above body) was painted a gray/silver. It was not just a primer. I have never seen this and referrenced my Superior History book to no avail. The original build sheet says it was painted ebony. Did Superior "paint" the tops a gray/silver THEN paint it the color of the car? Or was this possibly an anomoly and it was actually a two-toned hearse? Can't figure out how to insert pics. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for response. What is your opinion on two-tone? I had never considered it because I had never seen it....when I got it, it was all black. Appreciate your thoughts. If you can direct me to some photos of that color scheme, great!

My '65 Superior

Hi Doug,

As far as I know my 1965 Superior combo has never been repainted. The original paint is black with a silver top.
I can send you a picture of it if you want to see my car.
PM me in you are interested.

Maybe this photo will help...

Doug,

Good luck with your project. Looking forward to seeing some photos! Personally, I hope you opt for a 2-tone color scheme. As an example, here is a 1964 Superior Crown limousine finished in contrasting colors.

Thanks for your input guys. Pics would be great as I was confused on color. I have pics of restore so far but trying to post them is not working. Soon to come.

Doug, the way this site is set up, you have to be a site supporter (paid, see the yellow box at the top) to post a picture. Or, you can post a picture on a photo posting site and then link to that from your post here.

Given the opportunity I would always, always go with a two tone color scheme. I just happen to think that it is way more eye catching and classy. My car on the other hand (which I no longer own) left a lot to be desired. It was in rough shape on the exterior. The top was grey but by the time I got it the rest of the body was some odd type of primer looking maroon. I sold the car (cha ching $$) before I did anything to it.

Whatever you do, do it for you. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks or what someone else's taste might be. It's your car for you to enjoy so have fun with it. I learned that from a very wise (older) gentleman in CT., who I'm glad to now have as a friend and mentor. :D

I poseted pics of the 64 superior. When I first saw that it was silver on top, I was impressed by the contrast. I just thought that it was automatically painted the body color a time of final assembly or something.

looks to me like they had the insert on the side the silver and the top and bottom black. that is a combination I have seen on others. it most likely would not be noted on the tag. as trim colors were not. we have discovered that the 63 ambulance I'm working on was two shades of green. the dark green on the bottom and a mint green on the top. so it looks like superior was trying to introduce some color to there line to give a little more curb appeal to there cars. I know you could have your car painted any way you want but the factory had a lot of sway on things that were not special ordered.
