1960's Superior Medical Cabinets

Hello folks, I'm looking for a little bit of help with my 63 Superior High Top. It has a small medical cabinet against the divider between the driver and patient compartment, however an outline on the floor indicates that there may have been another storage cabinet, perhaps for oxygen bottles. I am looking to find another one of these, or reproduce something similar. If anybody has photos of 60's Superior Ambulance medical cabinets or an actual 60's Superior Ambulance (paging Jean-Marc) the help would be greatly appreciated. The current cabinet or what is left can be seen on Ed Renstrom's dropshots of my car. Thanks everybody. :thankyou2:

will we don't know what was bolted in the car threw those holes but I found the book with the pictures of the built in med cabinet. defiantly never was in this car.

Brendan,

Now that I am awake......

I believe that the Pontiacs and Cadillacs had very differant cabinets. The Cadillacs had the taller wider cabinets made out of wood, and the Pontiacs had the el cheapo metal cabinets.

The pics that Dwayne posted would be more like what you are looking for.

I wonder if that interior door handle was moved to the other side of the window crank according to the cabinetry used.

Good question. My guess is that the interior door handle placement has to do with whether the doors are hinged at the front or rear. The manual photo shows a front-hinged door, and Brendan's are hinged at the rear (suicide style). :my2cents:

Mystery Outline

I noticed in Albany that Dan Skivolocke's 59 has the same outline and screw holes.

Ed,

Do you have a source for the textured aluminum that Superior used on the doors and patient compartment side walls?

I used Laminate for the doors and insides. It's an exact relica. It's called "Chemical #253 Laminate".* It goes for $10.25 per square foot.

Jim my plan is to have your friend build the cabinet for me, but I need to know what to have him build. One of the guys I work my ambulance job with has an old Caddy Ambulance medical cabinet in his garage, which has been cut to sit over his fridge out there. It is too big for my car but has parts such as doors I can use. He has said I am welcome to have it.

this parts book I have found shows that large cabinet in the 63-64 year. as the built in one. it would look to me that your out of luck on the left inside remote no matter what way the the door was hinged. there would be enough space to reach up and trip it but it would not be a easy task. with two cars similar interior and holes in the same pattern on the bulkhead. one would guess that it had a small cabinet attached to the spare tire box. that is what is on the other side of this one. something like the cabinet in the doors with a finished edge. but this parts book does not show it.
thanks Jim for the part number for the trim. I'll look for it localy and see if I can pick it up. we need a bunch.

Here's a pic from the '60 Superior brochure. Keep in mind, they built custom cabinets as well so there could be quite a bit of variation in designs.

Jean-Marc is right, the Pontiacs did have a standard, metal cabinet instead of the wooden ones for the Cadillacs. (The exception was Superior Pontiacs for New Jersey, where the local dealer had custom, wood cabinets made by a local cabinet company for squads that wanted the space of a Cadillac with the speed and lower cost of the Pontiac. My '64 Superior Pontiac has one of these unusual cabinets with 4 drawers and space for a resuscitator.)

Thanks Steve, looks like there were many different variations on the cabinet, most were probably built for an individual customers request. Just like today.
