1955 S & S Victoria restoration

I would suggest that he register on this website, and also join the Society, where he can get the needed help from our diverse group of members.

Great looking car... even in the condition that it is right now... !

I myself know very little about the Cadillac that he is restoring, but I really do wish him well in his project. It would be great to see him and the car at a future PCS meet or show. As Paul mentioned, have him at least join this website if not the PCS as a whole and I am sure that he will get a lot of information from the folks around here.

Wow...

Now this is not for the faint of heart..."Best of Luck!"

Hey Guys!

Big thanks to Kevin for posting a link to my post over on the CLC forums. That is my unsightly, sooner or later to be, beautiful hearse. Tonight I got an email offering me the entire sheetmetal portion of a 1955 S&S Victoria, which includes pristine drivers doors and near perfect rear quarters, as well as the trim peices... at no cost to me...I have to go get it in Canada so I am researching all the ins and outs of importing car parts. I read that gifts are not subject to duty, but I'm not sure if this includes car parts as gifts or not. I am going to call customs and find out on tuesday. For 700.00(gas money) and a few nights in a motel..I can have all the body and trim parts to fix my car easily. I am going to be cleaning up the front suspension today and installing new shocks on the front chassis, as long as it does not rain.....I do not have the car inside the shop yet. I am super excited about possibly being able to get all the parts I need to fix the hearse and also to be a member on this forum and am looking into joining the PCS as a full fledged member. Thanks everyone for your responses so far....I know this will not be an easy undertaking, but I fell in love with this coach in 2002 and I feel crushing it would be doing it a major disservice.

Welcome Jeff,

I'm glad to see you joined the Friends of the Professional Car Society message forum. And that's great news about the offer from Canada. If your trip takes you through Michigan, you'd be welcome to stay here and save the motel charge.

The good news is that the US doesn't charge a duty on old car parts that are returning to the states, where they originally were produced. In the early 1960's, the US and Canada signed a cross border compact that allowed cars and parts to cross the border duty free to help stimulate the Canadian auto building industry. I believe that the pact is still in effect. I do know from selling parts on eBay a few years ago, that parts going into Canada for private use are subject to a (GST/HST) Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax.

Very good deal...I am going to double check everything with customs before I take the trip...I do not want to be surprised upon my return to the border. I have a quick question and I'm not sure if anyone will know this or not. I need to order the rear shocks for my coach, but there is no listing for the 86 series cars, only the standard line of cars and the 75 series limosine. I know that the front shocks are the same as the 75 series limo, but are the rear shocks the same as well? The front shocks I purchased yesterday, but the rear shocks would need to be ordered. I am outfitting it with monroe gas-matic's which is the only option I had at the parts store. Another store had Gabriel classics, but I have never had any real luck with the Gabriel shocks/struts. Thanks guys!

going to Canada

Jeff,
Remember that you need a border crossing card or a passport to go to Canada now. I am not sure just how the crossing card works or if there are limits on it. Maybe some of our members can fill out this question. Whatever you use to cross the border for parts, good luck.
Mike
