1949 Miller Production Numbers?

Our project is a 1949 Miller Cadillac limo-style combination. Can anyone help us with production numbers for 1949? Thanks in advance. Doug

49 Miller

Doug,

If you haven't already, take a look at www.mmchapter.com and click on "Monthly M-M". You may wish to contact Taron Smith (a PCS member) of Columbia City , IN to compare Miller dataplate numbers.

Disclaimer: I did not write the caption that appears below the photo but am humbled that someone felt I was worthy to be called a Miller-Meteor "expert."

1949 Miller-Cadillacs

DOUG: The "Black Book" doesn't have production numbers on your car, but a 1949 Miller-Cadillac Ambulance was priced at $5,700.00 and a Duplex Combination Coach in the same body styling was $5,595.00. Total U.S. Productuion for (ALL) Ambulances and Hearses in 1949 was: 2,853..... considered a "slump" year following production highs in 1948. MM

'49 Millers

A friend of mine in Kendallville Indiana owns a '49 Miller landau combination. It's somewhat modified, with a Chevy 350 and automatic transmission, and slightly hacked rear compartment (not his doing), but otherwise shows very well. If I get a response on how to post pics on this site, I'll show ya.

It's very interesting that two '49 Millers exist within 1/2 hour of each other. This summer, Gene Smith and I dined with the man from Kendallville, at a huge car show associated with the Auburn Cord Dusenberg Festival, in Auburn Indiana. Gene's dad is C. Taron Smith, who owns the Miller combination that Tony refers to.

I also have memory of a '49 Miller landau hearse that sold as part of the Kruse Fall Auction, in Auburn IN, 10 or more years ago. It wasn't perfect, but it did drive, and was highly restorable. Somewhere I think I have pics of this car too.

Tom

Doug, if you can wait a few more weeks, the new Miller-Meteor book by Tom McPherson will be coming out. The book covers the history of A.J. Miller, Meteor Coach, and Miller-Meteor. I've seen the proof, though I didn't read the whole thing. Usually, Tom's books have production figures, so it's quite likely you can get your answer from the book when it comes out.
