when I was around 20 years old, my girlfriends father died so her mother asked me to take his suit over to the home for them to dress him. Sharron's mother said it was hanging on the back of the door and a bag with his shoes were there, so I grab them all and drove over to the home where I gave it to the gentleman. After returning home I found everyone either crying or laughing... Sharron told me that the home called and asked if they were sure they wanted dad to be dressed like that.... her mother said YES that was his favorite outfit !!!!!! yes I took the wrong bag .... it had her Mothers red dress and heels !!! needless to say.... I was no longer Sharron's boyfriend after the funneral I laugh everytime I see a red dress !! lol

There have been so many strange funerals hard to put them into words. So here are tid bits from many.

1) Sheriff's called due to major fist fight
2) Police in attendance due to possible gun fire
3) Open casket visitation then remove the body and hold the funeral with body in the prep room'
4) Wife climbs into casket to be with husband
5) Sister follows hearse to cemetery only to hit the gas instead of brake and rearends the hearse. Jaws of life required to get casket out.
6) Pallbearers trip and drop casket into grave
7) A mourner bows at the casket and bumps his head almost causing the casket to go over.

More to come!!!!

We had the funeral of Alton Brown's (Food Network Alton Brown) grandmother a few years ago. He came in just before the funeral was to start in our chapel and asked if we had any of the old type funeral home fans, you know the hand held fan, which we did have some and I ran to the back room to get them. He took them and numbered them on the the back and we gave one to each person as they entered the chapel. Alton had a suit case and with him and carried it into the chapel, we did not have a clue what he was up to. He was last to get up and speak, he said a few words about his grandmother and proceeded to open the suit case and started to draw numbers and ask those who had the matching number on the back of their fan to raise it up because they had won a prize. The prizes were items like his grandmothers old wigs and other junk that no one would want. In moments he had everybody in tears laughing, it was like an auction and a joke. He is very much like his grandmother. In his closing remarks he said his grandmother had left them clues for a scavenger hunt to find where she had hidden her jewelry and if anyone had any information about it to please let their family know.

Hum, lets see! Here are a few short snipits that have happened here! All but a couple since I've been here!

1. Played the Golden Earing song Radar Love 6 times during a final viewing.
2. Home made casket brought in by same family. And I helped change out hinges during visitation and we used an ambulance cot for the bier.
3. Family members threaten to kill each others chickens during fight.
4. Windows knocked out of FH storm doors.
5. Deputy fires shot into air as their trying to chase and arrest a family member after funeral who has a warrant out on him.
6. I fell in open grave when side of grave gave way.
7. Family's sitting in separate rooms.
8. Casket delivered from a casket store in a Toyota Prius!
9. Family drove family member with their casketed body on the floor of a Uhaul trailer from out of state.
10. Placed about 15 cremated poodle remains at foot of a casket.

When I was first in funeral service about 20 years ago, we had a funeral inside the funeral home in Minneapolis. At the same time, just across the street, the Minneapolis Police and the FBI used a front end loader to smash down the front wall of a known drug house and arrest the occupants. It sounded like WWIII with the all the gun shots. People were diving for cover under the pews in the funeral home..after that, nothing was strange any more.

LOL I love it keep them coming !

I remember when my cousin died way back in the 80's we were all standing by the gave...ready to lower her in when...the walls gave way........ we all went into the gave at the same time casket and 6 guys. ....... and her dog ! I was the only one UNDER the casket !!! 3 people passed out including my aunt, mother, and someone in a wheelchair....one of my sister's took a picture of me climbing out ( god know why she had a camera at a funeral ?? ) looking back it was very funny !

Well here are a couple.

1. almost the whole famly showed up drunk for the funeral.
2. Same famly, all had to find a good head stone to stand on and fire up there cigarettes to watch the casket get lowered, and the grave get covered.
3. A lady got served a supina dearing a visitation and was going around showing it off to everyone, and telling them all about it, and why she got it, like she was proud of it. She even walked up to me and told me about it. I had never seen this woman in my life, and why she thought I cared I'll never know.
4. After a funeral service one day a lady walked up to me and asked if there was a car for the paul bearers to ride in, or were they going to have to drive there selfs. When I told her they would be driving there selfs, she got exstreamly mad and gave me a ear full like it was my fault, and said that was the most rediculus thing she had ever heard, and stomped off to her car. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure she wasn't even a family member, just a friend of the family.

I'm sure there are a few more, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind. My uncle is a Funeral Directer in NewOrleans, and could tell you crazy stories all day long.

1: Funeral delayed, the family was 30 minutes late, Oh, they only lived half a mile away from the home.

2: The driver of the hearse realized that he had forgotten to fuel the hearse before the funeral, so he stopped at a gas station on the way to the cemetery. Every car in line drove through the station, some asking later what was the significance of the delay and of the drive through at the station.

3: And one happened as I went to a home to do a service, as I got to the home the State Police were there parking cars, opening the door to the home, and just all over the place. I asked the Home's Director what was up. The Governor is coming, seems that the deceased son worked for the Governor, and yes the Governor did show. Have you ever been to a Funeral Home that has State Troopers in full dress uniform as the doorman?

Went to a local funeral a few weeks ago, and the burial was just outside of Boston. Hearse driver got lost, and the whole procession spent 45 minutes driving around the streets of Boston, Cambridge, and a few other towns. Only when the relative of the deceased took control of the procession, did we get the the cemetery. The funeral home forgot to make the arrangements for the Priest to be there, so that added another 45 minute delay.

Paul that remindes me of another time...My ex brother-in-law worked in a home in Toronto, one time he was driving lead into the cemetery when he noticed that the backhoe was still digging the grave....so he kept on driving around the cemetery when the workers noticed they were late, they started to work faster.

he just kept on driving around and around and around the cemetery with 20 cars behind him ! at one point he said the backhoe was working so fast that the dirt was just flying all over the place.....and the funny thing was NO ONE said anything ! one man did walk up and commented on how BIG the cemertery was !!!

A few years ago, a friend of mine died. Per Islamic custom, his funeral was scheduled for 2 days later. We all showed up at the mosque where the funeral was scheduled, and waited, and waited. Seems the ME hadn't released the body. And so, it was postponed to the following day...

...Have you ever been to a Funeral Home that has State Troopers in full dress uniform as the doormen?
Well, yeah, for a Trooper's funeral.

When my dads dad passed away back in the 70s, when they got to the cemetery everyone turned in, but the hearse kept going. One of my uncles took off after him, and he said he like to have never caut up with him and got his atention. The bad thing is, the FD driving the hearse was also a friend of the family, and knew exactly where he was going.
