Time to bow out again

Jim Tighe - Deceased 1942 - 2012

March 10, 1964 - April 27 2012
Hi, All. Last Spring I had been away from the car hobby for several years, when I decided to sell our '64 M-M combo that had sat in the garage for about 5 yrs. Ron Devies bought it, and he and some other folks persuaded my wife Sharon and me to attend some PCS gatherings, which we enjoyed. I even bought another car, a '92 Eagle Cad.

Fast-forward to March 1, 2011. On that day I rec'd a cancer diagnosis. A scan and a biopsy confirmed a tumor on my bile ducts, the tubes which carry liver secretions to the gallbladder. A bypass stent was put in on 3-11 at OSU Hosp in Columbus, so the liver stuff is once again draining. The larger prob is that there is no cure for this particular cancer. The OSU doc wanted to do an extensive surgery that might buy an unknown amt. of time, if one survives the procedure. I have declined the surgery, and will simply let this matter play itself out, with palliative care as the time grows shorter. I am told I should have a year or so, maybe a year and a half. I will get a new stent and another scan in about 2 mos. My energy level is way down, along with my weight, and none of this will get any better. I am to see an oncologist in a couple weeks, but have no idea what will transpire there. I do not want either chemo or rads.

So, I must bow out of any more car-related activities. There may be an outside chance that Sharon and I can briefly attend something this year. Will just have to wait and see. I have sold the Eagle to Rocky Fluegge in Wisc, and hope he gets many good years from it. My good friend Dwayne Brooks arranged the sale, and I am indebted to him for doing so.

Not really much else to say. You all take care. Jim

Very sorry to hear, Jim. We had some very entertaining talks in the last year or so...hopefully you can stay in touch with the PCS internet community, talking on the computer may be a little less taxing on the system than driving 3-4 hours to meet up with us.

Hope everything plays out as best it can. I will be thinking of you.

Jim, I am so sorry to hear this. Revitalizing your car and you into the PCS was a double play last year. The car is running great and I continue to absolutely love it. I hope you get a chance to get to Hudson to take her for a spin now she is back in tip top shape.

any man that likes pro cars and trains can't be all bad. hope we can meet up before you check out. but stay here as long as you can man. we need your input.

Sorry to hear the bad news. My Grandmother beat terminal cancer over 20 yrs ago, so don't give up hope just yet, you never know. Hope to see you in Hudson, OH if you can make it. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.

Jim, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I really enjoyed getting to know you at meets this year and I hope that you can join us whenever you feel up to it. I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you.

Jim, I was so glad to have seen your return to the PCS after so many absent years since we first met in Marietta, decades ago. My heart is heavy upon reading your post. I had been looking forward to seeing you again in Hudson. Know that you will be in our prayers, and that perhaps you'll have the strength to visit us in Dublin, during the CLC Grand National. Meanwhile, please put up your best fight. I know you will, my friend. We'll all be thinking about you and your family. Tom Hoczyk

Very sorry to hear this Jim, I was looking forward to meeting you in person in Ohio. You will be in our thoughts and prayers, with a little luck, and alot of prayer we still may meet.

Not sure Terri and I even have the proper words in a situation like this Jim. Just know we're thinking about you with prayers.

Jim

After being choked up reading your message... I want to tell you a little story.

I first met Lyle Steadman at the PCS meet in Chatham ON in 1993.
I enjoyed this mans friendship for over a decade. At one point in time,
the doctors gave him a few months to live and sent him home.
He figured he was going home to get things in order and wait it out.
As time went on, a few months passed, a year past... and it ended up being about 3 1/2 years before he passed on. Over three years longer than they gave him !

Another guy I know, a hearse guy, was given a year to live... 2 years ago !
and he's still with us !

I first met you at the MM meet in Ohio last year. So glad you got back into the club and provided lots of knowledge and stories for this group.

Listening to you tell people about the things you have done in the past and hearing in your voice, the passion you had for cars and trains, was incredible.

Reading your message about you not wanting to go through any of the treatments (likely painful and understandable) and letting things go the way they will... although very Brave on your part to be able to say that... I hope you don't give up !!!

You may be felling bad now, as with any illness while you have it, I hope the doctors are wrong and you will be with us a lot longer than given.

Like with the two examples above, please Stay Strong, like a freight train, and keep chugging along as long as you can ! Please don't give up !

You have your own family, and a PCS family, here to provide support and encouragement.

If there is anyway you are able to join us in Ohio at this years meet, we would love to have you !!!!! I'm sure we can wheel you around on a cot if that would be easier for you to see all your friends and the cars that way.

Everyone will be thinking about you and praying you get better !

We hope you take a turn for the better and see many more miles with us.

All the best Jim !

Take care,
Darren

When you first posted I found myself at a loss for words. It got me thinking about the few times we shared after Ron bought your coach and introduced us. I enjoyed our interchanges and meeting your wife as well. I'm hoping you will try to keep in touch with us all, both on the board and in person as health permits. Our thoughts and best wishes are with you.

Many thanks to all of you for your support. I have not given up, so do not fret on that score. I am merely trying to be realistic. I too have known people who far out-lived their prognoses. I have many projects to attend to, so lying around is not in the cards. I just have to pace myself carefully. As for rejecting potential treatments. I have weighed the pros and cons, and would rather not suffer the ravages of the Whipple surgery ( that's really its name - look it up on the Net - ) or the chemicals, having seen first-hand what the latter can do. Anyway, buds are out again, and a t-storm is brewing, so it must be Spring.
