Well First of All It Ain't in Warren No More

Funny thing happened on the way to planning the meet.............................. Dan Skivolocke picked out a beautiful meet location in Warren, Ohio called the Avalon it was a great place for our meet with ample parking, lots to do and the Packard Museum nearby. Unfortunately Dan got ill, when we went back to take the next step, the place had changed hands, they wanted us to park our cars at a farm they own about a mile down the road and oh, the jacked up the price another hundred a night,,,,,,,,NO THANK YOU!

So then we looked at Oglebay, West Virginia at their resort. Lots of things to do, beautiful location, prices were decent but they wanted us to park in a lot down a steep hill that would not have worked for our older members and members with mobility issues, back to the drawing board.

Then I remembered Walt McCall asked me a few years ago why we don't do a meet in Loudonville, Ohio, the home of Flxible. I looked into the Mohican State Lodge at Perrysville, Ohio. Perrysville is situated between Loudonville and Mansfield. There is so much to do in this area and it is going to be unlike any International Meet you ever attended. As a matter of fact I feel there is something for everyone in this area and at the lodge itself. In the coming weeks I will be telling you all the things to do in the area and official meet activities planned.

The actual meet starts Tuesday June 29th,2021 but the lodge has agreed to give us the discounted pricing Sunday 6/27 through Sunday July 4th. In today's installment, I am going to tell you about the lodge itself. Nestled in the hills of Perrysville overlooking Pleasant Hill Lake, the lodge has 96 guest rooms. There are four parking lots on the site all close together and all level with the lodge. The rustic lodge has a gift shop, conference and banquet rooms and a spectacular restaurant and bar. We spent the weekend here this weekend and the food was great! Breakfast HAD NOT ONE BUT TWO KINDS OF UNLIMITED SCRAMBLED EGGS AND NEVER, I SAID NEVER RAN OUT! And every meal was great. There is a large indoor pool, hot tub and sauna and a large outdoor pool. Activities include tennis, volleyball, shuffleboard, game room, fire pits and a cemented walking trail around the facility. The view from the restaurant overlooks the rolling hills and Pleasant Hill Lake.
Getting to the lodge is a pleasant drive. Once you arrive off the interstate, it is likely you will not drive on a four lane highway again for the week. It is all well paved two lane roads that surround the area and the drive is leisurely. While there, if our events are not interesting to you,you can wander off on your own and rent a boat of varying sizes from the Pleasant Hill Marina, go fishing, or go golfing at the Pleasant Hill Golf Course or enjoy the Lodge's amenities, if your brave enough you can take on the zip line that goes across the area..
In upcoming posts I will talk about what we are planning on doing in nearby Mansfield, Loudonville, and trips to Berlin, Sugarcreek and Dover. I think you will find you may want to come early and stay late.

Mansfield

One of our locations will be Mansfield. In Mansfield there is a fire museum that is being considered, a large carousel in downtown that is under roof that is beautiful, a drive in movie theater that Sara is looking into as a possible venue but the definite is a event at the Mansfield Reformatory that Dwayne Brooks is helping out as our point man. The Reformatory is a architectural work of art that holds tours. The grounds make an excellent location to display our cars. The reformatory has been the site for several feature films including scenes in Air Force One and Escape but is best known as the featured site in The Shawshank Redemption. The drive from the resort to the city is about a 13 mile trip.

It's Official

The Mohican State Lodge became the official site of the 2021 International Meet with the contract signed last night. The Lodge is offering rooms at the discounted rate of $115.00 per night starting June 27th thru the Fourth of July. The actual dates of the meet are June 29th-July 3 so the other days are bonus days if you want to arrive early and enjoy the activities the area offers or just soak in the beauty and solace or stay over a day and enjoy the fourth of July fireworks as Monday the 5th will be the government holiday.
To reserve your room you must call 419-938-5411. When booking you MUST specify you are with The Professional Car Society to receive the discounted rate. I suggest you reserve early as there are only 96 rooms in this hotel and the other hotels are 20 minutes away. BOOK NOW!

Loudonville

A little over ten minutes from the host lodge is the Village of Loudonville, the home of Flxible. If you own a Flxible this meet is a must attend event. The factory still stands and houses a golf ball refurbishing plant. It is a charming little town with friendly people and a vibrant Main Street that houses an ice cream parlor, and what looks to be a fine dining restaurant. A beautiful town green that will house a antique fair on the Fourth of July. Right off the green is the Snyder Lindsay Funeral Home which looks like a nice looking place. Not sure if it is still there but Lindsay's did have a mid sixties Flxible combo. I am looking into if it is still there and will reach out to them and invite them to the meet. Also in the town is the Mohican River. The Mohican is a calm shallow river. If you want a relaxing afternoon there is a canoe livery there that you can leisurely paddle down river, and then get shuttled back up to town.
To the East of town is the Ugly Bunny Winery. We had lunch there along with a sampling of some very good wine. More to come, book your reservations now, and remember to tell them you are with the Professional Car Society.

If you need pet friendly accomodations

The Studebaker Drivers Club held our National Meet in Mansfield, OH in 2018
Excellent area, the tour of the Ohio State Reformatory Ron mentions is worth the trip. The Mohican doesn't allow pets, check their website for particulars.
The closest hotel with pet friendly accommodations to the Mohican Lodge is:
La Quinta Inn and Suites
120 Stander Ave
Mansfield OH 44903
419-774-0005
Located off exit 169 of I-71 About 15 miles away from meet HQ.

It is a typically interstate location with more than average amenities nearby, Super Walmart, restaurants etc. Parking is adequate but not luxurious.
Ron, feel free to edit this post as you see the need.

Ron,

If we drive our ambulance, are there an Ohio laws we need to be aware of in relation to the lights on them. (Need to be covered, disabled, etc). Last thing this Michigan boy needs is some OSHP rivalry justice, lol

If they give you any trouble, just tell them your coach is actually a hearse with its sleeves rolled up and the lights are actually a very dark amber color when lit and your siren is bigger than his/her siren. :D

As long as you don't run with them on there should be no trouble. There is nothing in the Ohio Revised Code that prohibits them being mounted.

Smith Funeral Home and Ambulance

I have been saving the best for last. While we have not finalized the schedule as to when, we WILL be taking a little bus trip up the road to nearby Sugarcreek, Ohio where Smith Funeral Home is located. Bob has graciously agreed to host us stopping in for lunch they will be providing and seeing his facility. The we will get back on the bus and head up the road to Dover to view his collection of pro-cars, funeral and EMS equipment. If you ever attended one of the Carnation Meets where we visited here it was well worth the trip. The thing is now his collection is even much larger than it was back then. During the course of the day we will be making a few stops also be making some stops in the heart of Amish Country to shop for anything including Amish made products and snacks for in the parking lot.

I purchased my 1962 Chevrolet ambulance in 2010 from the estate of LLoyd Ray in Nebraska. On the drive East, I had a State Patrol following me the on the Ohio Turnpike. The speedometer wasn't working, so I had to just try to go with the flow of traffic, but the old Chevy just wasn't up to it. It was probably because I was barely going the minimum speed for the turnpike. It has since been restored to its original performance, and now it will keep up with traffic. Wonder if I will get an "escort" again in 2021??

Probably runs better since it has been modified :).

The 899 horse power engine made a big difference, plus the Tremec 6 speed shifts like a dream.. I can stand the front end up in the air about 2 feet, and burn rubber for a 1/4 mile. Can't wait till the tracks open up...
