We have used both the steel and the aluminum repair rods. Takes a bit of
practice. One of the local welding supply stores carry the rods.
I first saw the aluminum rods at a car show/swap meet.
I will still use traditional equipment to weld trailers and car parts.

Bought a bundle of the aluimiloy repair rods at the Turkey Rod Run swap meet coral in Daytona last year after watching a couple of the demos that were being put on there. Supposedly you can repair/weld about anything with these rods and a butane torch. Like Mike I'm not going to weld any mainline or heave duty car parts with this stuff but I bought mine with the idea of repairing and reattaching broken letters on hearse and ambulance name plates. I've yet to try them though.
