Right Out Of Hawaii 5-O

C&C Patch

Nice patch, maybe 20 years old or so. The newer patch has "EMS" instead of "Ambulance". The City and County of Honolulu EMS philosophy is, "O Ka Mea Ma'i Ka Mua" or, "The person sick is first." Even older patches have "Health Department". Most of these photos are C&C ambulances, but I think I included one from Molokai (another Island). The photo is of Mayor Fasi and the first paramedic class.

On scene in Hawaii 5-0

Only on TV can an ambulance arrive at the scene a Cadillac and leave the scene as a Pontiac.

Thanks for posting these great historical pictures.
Are there any salvage yards on the islands, where some of these older ambulances might be just waiting for a collector to "pick their bones" or remove them to become the next restoration project. The 1958 Pontiac is one that I would love to see come back to life.

Not much left

Sadly, most ambulance here get sent somewhere else to finish their "life" and never seen again. There is two that I know of on the Big Island of Hawaii. A 50s Cadillac black combination, wasted--Not even good for parts.

The other, that did survive, is a pretty complete 50s chevy that is still going to car shows there. I'll look for photos. The City liked less expensive ambulances, usually Packards and Pontiacs. The hospitals and private companies used more Buicks and Cadillac ambulances.

A fascinating bit of history! I used to live on the North Shore of Oahu, off Pupukea Rd., on the Mountain near Waimea Bay. My eldest son was born in Kapiolani Woman's and Children's Hospital. I miss the Hawaiian weather...absolute paradise...That said, pretty much everything rusts in Hawaii...I had a computer tower that rusted completely through. I have never seen a computer rust before. Cars turn to dust on that island. It is worse than the Mid-West!
I often wonder how folks on the Islands keep their prized collector cars from decaying before their eyes. I had a BMW 635 csi (Shark)...it was an awesome car...the 6 series motor with a manual trans, 2+2, sun roof...it tore up the H1 like nobody's business. One of the best handling cars I have ever driven. I left it on the Island because of all the rust underneath.

Kapiolani Ambulance

Kapiolani had their own ambulance to pick up sick kids, here is the blessing in the 1980s, I think.

Like the '58 Superior/Pontiac; LOVE the '60 Memphis/Dodge!
