Accident During Funeral Procession

Very scary, but the start of the procession had made the turn and I could see nothing that indicated it was a funeral procession, generally people are respectful but that too is fading fast, Hell most won't pull over for emergency vehicles, note for those travelling to Ontario on multi lane highways if there is an emergency vehicle at the side of the road NEW law says you must move over 1 lane if safe to do so, or slow down otherwise, Its all about paying attention and plain old common courtesy....

You can't legislate out stupidity.

But I will say, it doesn't appear that the procession vehicles had their headlights on. That is common (not mandated, at least here in MD), and indicates vehicles in a procession. So it would be a bit hard to tell.

Still, the guy in the pickup should have been able to see the motorcycles and car stopped in front of him...

its called RESPECT and COMMON SENSE and alot of people have niether !

when I driving the Coach some people will be right up my ass following so close drives me crazy They have no idea that I'm not carrying someone's loved one !

Not sure what the Georgia laws are for a funeral procession, but for the most part, we all slow to a stop for them. I come to a stop and then take pictures :)

I do know that in an accident like this however, the law says the person doing the rear-ending is always at fault, regardless of why the person in front slowed down or stopped. This works and makes sense 99%+ of the time. The idea I assume is that if you're driving, you are responsible for being aware of your surroundings, maintaining a safe distance from the person in front of you, and being in control of your car. I think whether or not the motorcycles and Altima stopped, the person in the Dodge truck failed taking all three of these basic driving precautions.

RESPECT and Courtesy.....if that fails then COMMON SENSE...

Guy in truck was probably not paying attention.....or TEXTING.......

Florida law

FL law requires a rotating amber light on the lead vehicle. Smaller homes don't have sedans anymore. Around here, if the family wants a real or stretch limo, the home calls a local limo service and that's expensive. Some places have a strobe light which isn't rotating, but it sure is smarter. Some homes have gone to the clear strobes in the front and rear directional housings on both sedans and coaches. As you all have said, it's too bad this even has to be discussed.

will all I can say is if you do like the guys on the motor cycles did and pull over everyone would have had a chance. look again the mans not even stepping on the brake so that that set of lights are on. the guy in the pickup comes around the corner at speed has no were to go. motorcycle sitting on the edge, a line of cars on the left. he is trapped. locks them up and hopes for the best. two lane road no shoulder as it was. you need to show respect get it over off the road. darn lucky that the two stayed in the lane and not in the mist of the funeral. be interesting to hear the follow up on who was at fault if any was placed. looks to me like everyone broke at least one law

NC law says it is okay to slow for a procession, but if you are going to stop you must get completely off the road. I see people all the time stop in the middle of the road over a blind hill or around a dangerous curve - that is extremely dangerous to do. However, the two collisions I have seen happen like that happened on a straightaway.
I also noticed there doesn't seem to be headlights on the procession cars...

That amazes me cause the common sense here is to continue at the same speed, or slow down if you have a kind of respect, but stop to see a procession passing in the other lane is purely suicidal... Of course the pickup truck was fast but when a car just brake in your face for a procession that you just can't see the lead car what a surprise!!

Nebraska has no statutes on funeral processions. However, Nebraska statutes say that a funeral escort vehicle is an authorized emergency vehicle giving us permission to use red lights.

60-6,231. Flashing or rotating lights; authorized emergency vehicles; colors permitted.

A flashing or rotating red light or red and white light shall be displayed on any authorized emergency vehicle whenever operated in this state. A blue light may also be displayed with such flashing or rotating red light or red and white light. For purposes of this section, an authorized emergency vehicle shall include funeral escort vehicles.

At my funeral home we use red LEDs dash lights in the coach and limo. If its a a very large service we use the removal van with a red mini lightbar. Local law enforcement always stop traffic at the two main traffic lights to the cemetery for us but are not part of the procession.

For the most part traffic does respect the funeral procession but there are a few who don't like it when we slow them down.
